In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird ein multiperspektivischer und transdisziplinärer Blick auf die kultur- und sozialgeschichtliche Entwicklung der globalen Hip Hop- Kultur gewährt. Ausgehend von einer Skizzierung des Ursprungs der (Sub-)Kultur in den prekären “Ghettos” von New York erstreckt sich meine Analyse über nationale Grenzen hinweg und legt den Fokus im Sinne der Hip Hop-Nations auf die glokale Erscheinungsform in den ärmlichen Stadtteilen der brasilianischen Metropolen Rio de Janeiro und São Paulo, den sogenannten “Comunidades”. Basierend auf Feldstudien von Pardue, UNESCO und Anderen gehe ich der Frage nach, inwiefern Projekte von lokalen grassroots-Organisationen wie AfroReggae oder CUFA, sowie künstlerische Initiativen wie Rede Nami oder MOF eine hoffnungsvolle und selbstermächtigende Alternative im von Armut und Gewalt dominierten Alltag von marginalisierten Jugendlichen in peripheren urbanen Comunidades bieten kann. Dabei werden vor allem die beiden Hip Hop-Elemente Rap und Graffiti als Instrumente gesehen, um das soziale und kulturelle Empowerment der “Subjekte” voranzutreiben und Möglichkeiten der Selbstbestimmung und des kreativen, kritischen Ausdrucks zu bilden.
Meine Annäherung zum Thema “Hip Hop als revolutionäre Praxis zum Self- Empowerment” geschieht einerseits anhand einer hegemonialen Diskursanalyse a lá Foucault und darüber hinaus wird Fanons Konzept von “Gewalt und Violenz”, sowie diverse VertreterInnen der Cultural Studies, wie Hall oder Gilroy (welcher beispielsweise die Erforschung der afrikanischen Diaspora revolutionierte) zur Analyse herangezogen.

The present work provides a multiperspective and transdisciplinary view on ongoing processes of cultural and social development within the global Hip Hop- culture. Starting from a delineation of the roots of the (sub-)culture in the precary “getthos” of New York, my analysis stretches beyond national borders and draws its focus in terms of Hip Hop-Nations on the glocal manifestation in poor neighbourhoods in Brasil’s metropolitan cities Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo – the so-called “Comunidades”. Based on field researches of Pardue, UNESCO and others, I consider the question whether projects of local grassroots-organizations like AfroReggae or CUFA, as well as the artist initiatives like Rede Nami or MOF (Meeting Of Favelas) can represent a hopeful and self-empowering alternative in a everyday life dominated by poverty and violence for marginalized youths who keep struggling and dwelling in peripheric urban Comunidades. Thereby, Hip Hop- elements like Rap and Graffiti are seen as instruments in order to push social and cultural Empowerment of the “subjects” and offer opportunities of self- determination and creative, critical expression.
My approach to the topic “Hip Hop as a revolutionary practise of Self- Empowerment” happens on the one hand based on a hegemonial discursive analysis a lá Foucault and above I use Fanon’s concept of “Violence and Violenz” as well as diverse representatives of Cultural Studies – like Hall or Gilroy (who, for instance, revolutionized the investigation of the African diaspora) – in my analysis.
