Abstract
(Deutsch)
(vgl. Zhao, Grasmuck, Martin 2008)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Identity is the main theme of this work. It is not a uniform or permanent construct, but rather a compilation of various and different partial identities, which adapt to the reali-ties of the social environment. It is a lifelong project, which gets edited, modified and further developed by the individual. (cf. Ermann 2010, pp. 3) The conditions of post-modernity have a big impact on this process. In order to adapt the circumstances caused by postmodernism, it is important for the individual to have a flexible identity to vary, depending on the surroundings. (cf. Misoch 2004, pp. 106)
The Internet, as medium of postmodernism has a large impact on the production of identity. There you can distinguish between real life and virtual reality, between ON and OFF. The social networking sites, like Facebook, which is the most well-known here, connect between these two “worlds”. (cf. Leistert & Röhle 2011, pp. 23) However, the-se worlds do not exist apart from each other but complement and enhance each other. (cf. Neumann-Brown & Autentrieth 2011, pp. 18)
The primary goal of this diploma thesis is to draw attention to a very specific identity, the Facebook Identity. Although this is a virtual identity, it is strongly associated with the offline identity of the user. The individuals are shown with their real names and pic-tures, as well as their real friends. It is unique, which means that they can be tailored to the target group of the performers. (cf. Adler 2012, p 53)
The identity on Facebook is idealized by the user, which means that the negative omit-ted, while the positive aspects are lifted out. This idealization is supported because of the tabular arrangement of the profile which due to a simple comparison between the Facebook profiles. Such platforms lead to the creation of identities which are very simi-lar. (cf. Adler 2012, p 53)
However, this work is just a snapshot, because the Facebook environment can and will definitely change constantly. For this reason new research on this topic will be needed to control the effects of individual characteristics and to examine the other identity con-structions in this different environment. (cf. Zhao, Grasmuck, Martin 2008)
