Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
In my dissertation project I investigated the relationship between the fantastic in the arts and the music video. I started with an analysis of the history of the term “fantasy” as a base for the acceptance of fantastic art through the times. Based on theories mainly from the discipline of literature I tried to categorize, analyze and distinguish different forms of the fantastic within video clips. My assumption, that the music video shows a higher or more intense level of fantastic elements than other art forms prove as only partly true. The conditions of the medium support the fantastic more than any other communication medium, nevertheless low budgets and conventions still result in a preference of the classical performance video. In a structural analysis I tried to find out more about structure, parallels, intensities and conditions of fantastic music videos and compared these categories to the fantastic in other art forms. Finally I organized a survey on the impact of fantastic music videos on their viewers. I wanted to find out about differences between realistic and fantastic videos and the manifestation of those antagonist terms in the opinion of the participants. An increased advertising impact of fantastic videos – derived from literary theory and media effect research- could be proven evident in certain cases. The fantastic must not take to much space in the video, a combination of performance scenes and fantastic scenes or a fantastic narration seem to be most successful. Viewers in this case rate the video interesting, arty and think that it will stay in their mind. A complete fantastic video in contrast seems to scare off the audience and decrease memorization and interest, a clear renown form seems to be important even for the by definition rebellious music video.
