Die vorliegende monographische Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Neufreskierung (1192) der Scheunendachkirche Panagia Arakiotissa bei Lagoudera, Zypern. Die Untersuchung des Verhältnisses von bildtragender Architektur und Malfläche ergibt eine Korrelation von Bildformat und -thema bzw. -modus sowie neu identifizierte Phänomene: ein christologisch-mariologisches Bildschema, Ausrichtung der Bilder auf den zentralen Nischenraum und kirchenraumübergreifende Bezüge. Innerbildlich erweisen sich alle Darstellungen als aus Bildebenen konstruiert, deren Zahl Abstufungen von Ikonizität bis Narrativität unterscheiden lässt und deren Verzahnung ein neues Licht auf Bildaufbau und Betrachterwirkung wirft. Diese Betrachterbezogenheit erweist sich als durchgehendes Gestaltungsprinzip der Freskierung.

The present contribution deals with the frescoes of 1192 in the Panagia tou Arakou in Lagoudera, Cyprus. An analysis of the distribution of the paintings within the architecture yields a joint correlation of size and shape with topic and modus. Furthermore, we identify two crossing arcs of pictures devoted to Christ and the Theotokos, respectively; we find a marked orientation of the paintings towards the central niche; and we realize a multitude of topical, compositional, and painterly relations across the church. All frescoes are composed of several layers. Their number and linkage define the pictures' iconic or narrative character, affect their composition, and determine their impression on the beholder.
