Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Québécois cinema has always played a key role in the defintion and redifinition of québécois identity throughout the 20th century and specifically after the Quiet Revolution at the end of the 1960s. Therefore, québécois cinema was duly regarded as a compound of the so called “québécois specifity” and thus is to be considered instrumental within the souverainist context, for many québécois directors (e.g.: Denys Arcand, Pierre Falardeau, Gilles Groulx a.o.) took advantage of the film medium as a platform for the independence movement in Québec. However, Québécois national identity itself had to be redifined due to a the new demographic reality of Québécois society which has come about as a result of immigration in the 1990s and the loss of the second referendum on Québec´s sovereignty in 1995.
In this context Pierre Falardeau, who has often attracted media controversy in Canada, is one of the most fierce partisans of québécois separatism. Falardeau himself stated that his work is a pamphlet against Canadian federalism and his passionate belief in the necessity of Québec independence features prominently in most of his films, including “Octobre”, a film about the October crisis in 1970 or “15 février 1849”, a movie about the suppression of the Lower Canada Rebellion in 1839. Moreover, Falardeau links his support for Québec sovereignty to the struggles for national independence and decolonization abroad.
This paper is an interdisciplinary project that is focussed on the federal and provincial national cinema policies in Québec and the evolution of the separatist movements in Québec since the Quiet Revolution as mirrored in the cinematographic work of the separatist Québécois director Pierre Falardeau, one of the main representatives of the militant cinéma de guerrilla in Québec.
Employing Willam D. Coleman´s theory of “political communities” and applying aspects of Paul Ricœur`s hermeneutics as well as the method of “content analysis” this paper highlights the factors that have seriously affected and hence modified the souverainist discourse in the Québécois cinema in the last 25 years- such as commercialism, immigration, globalisation, hedonism, alienation and moral fragmentation and discuss them from the perspective of
Pierre Falardeau´s filmic “identity discourse”.
