Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis deals with external vowel sandhi in the Rigveda, esp. with the behaviour of the nom./acc./voc. dual case-endings. In Classical Sanskrit some of these dual endings are not subject to the sandhi rules generally applying to word-final vowels, i.e. they are pragrihya. The pragrihyatva of the ending -e of the f. long a- and n. a-stems and the ending long -i of the deví-stems can be explained diachronically, and their behaviour has spread by analogy to the ending long -i of the i-stems and consonantal stems, to the ending -vi: of the n. u-stems, to the ending long -u of the m./f. u-stems and even to the 2. and 3. dual endings of the middle verb -ethe/-a:the, -ete/-a:te. Cases of irregular contraction in these dual endings and in other case endings in the RV are discussed, and it is shown that they are restricted to function words. It is argued that they may be explained as reflections of informal speech. Irregular sandhi in function words is also exemplified by material found in two Upanishads and in the Udanavarga.
In addition, the so-called abhinihita sandhi and kshaipra sandhi phenomena are discussed.
To sum up, the behaviour of word-final vowels in the RV may reflect archaisms, informal styles or lento styles.
The discussion also contributes to the family-relations of some Rigvedic Rishis.
