Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Problem: This master thesis aims at descrying, if and how the dimensions defined by the „Anholt-GfK Roper Nation Brands Index“ find their way into the media coverage accompanying sporting events. Based on these results the author wants to draw conclusions in how far these events may influence a nations’ reputation. Theoretical Approach: This thesis at hand centers around the terms „Nation Brand“ respectively „Nation Branding“. These two terms are to be examined in the context of reputation in the framework of the theoretical approach. To do so, there will be an examination of factors influencing a nation’s brand. In a next step there will be a description of four different nation rankings. Using different research methods four different rankings will be composed showing the significance of the respective nation. The individual explanatory power of the different models will be examined and questioned in the course of this thesis. With regard to the interdisciplinary adaptability, the author refers to public diplomacy. Following, there will be a consideration of the actual influence sporting events have on the hosting nations. The theoretical approach finishes with three theories from the field of communication sciences, of which two focus on the impact of media coverage on the individual receiver (Agenda-Setting- and Framing-Approach). Practical Approach: The object of investigation for the problem at hand is the coverage within five major Austrian newspapers of the 2006 world championship in Germany, and the coverage within five German newspapers of the 2008 EURO hosted by Austria. Using the Mayring approach to content analysis, there was a quantitative exploration of the frequency and tonality in which the categories of the Nation Brands Index defined by Simon Anholt are part of the media coverage. In addition, further categories were elated within a qualitative process. The results based on the findings from the content analysis were used to answer six different matters related to the subject of this thesis. Finally, these outcomes were taken to develop different hypotheses encouraging further examinations. Conclusions: Besides the coverage of the sporting events themselves, the Austrian as well as the German media picked up subjects related to NBI, and that in a mostly positive way. Proportionately, there was more positive coverage of Germany than of Austria. Based on the results of the content analysis, the author derives, that the positive media coverage might have taken a positive impact on the reputation of the regarding nations Germany and Austria. In summary, sporting events as the ones regarded within the context of this thesis, are an interesting platform for the individual hosting nations, as they have a strong impact on the construction and perception of the reputation of these hosting nations. If there is an actual connection between the hosting of a sporting event and a positive impact on the individual reputation, is to be regarded as part of the hypothesis testing approach to nation branding.
