Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract

This paper is primarily centered on the following questions: Who speaks (for whom)? Who is listened to? Who is noticed? Who is (re) presented? All of these are late-breaking questions that I will discuss in this paper. I will try to answer these questions from a post-colonial, feminist perspective. In this Master thesis I lay focus on the fields of ‘representation’ and the ‘production of knowledge’. The post- colonial perspective will illustrate how certain power structures have remained to our time. Based on the texts by Gayatri C. Spivak and Chandra T. Mohanty, I will dedicate myself to the field of ‘representation’ and ‘production of knowledge’. Prior to this I will make an excursion to the feministic theory and its criticism by ‘other’ feminists. Their point is to break the universal understanding of the homogeneous subject woman, as well as to allow and acknowledge the diversity and the multiplicity of feminist movements in theoretical discourses. Furthermore, I will try to approach the field of colonialism and imperialism. In order to understand post-colonial feminism, it is essential to first take a look at feminism and colonialism. Colonial invasions have shaped the southern as well as the northern hemisphere and still continue to have an effect in our days. A relevant aspect of the colonial discourse is the politics of representation as well as the production of knowledge. Post- colonial theorists point out these power structures and question the assumptions of the so named Third World- woman. In Foucoult’s discourse theory, representation is described as the source of the production of knowledge. Colonialism also has strongly influenced the system of knowledge and its perception. Eurocentrism, universalism, and androcentrism are just a few of the ‘isms’ that are responsible for the generalization and the blindness in the production of knowledge. Theories are part of the political praxis and do not portray a gender or history neutral piece of work. In representation, the production of the ‘other’ is of central importance for the self- attribution and attribution of the ‘others’. This is why colonialism finds its way of continuance and a power system remains preserved through representation and knowledge.
