Das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen Materie und Diskurs und zwischen sozialer Konstruktion und Materialität hat eine lange Geschichte innerhalb feministischer Theoriebildung. Diese Masterarbeit widmet sich dem Forschungskontext New Materialism, der die Möglichkeit bereitstellt, diese „traditionellen“ Dichotomien umzuarbeiten und an ihren Grenzen zu operieren. Sie ist damit an den Schnittstellen zwischen Philosophie, feministischer Theorie und Wissenschaftsforschung angesiedelt.
Zu Beginn werden disziplinäre Herkunftslinien des Forschungsfeldes aufgezeigt, die Begrifflichkeit „New Materialism“ reflektiert, die Entwicklung innerhalb feministischer Theorie dargestellt und es werden Charakteristiken dieses heterogenen Forschungsfeldes versammelt.
Ziel der Arbeit ist es, aktuelle feministische Positionen um den New Materialism zu untersuchen: Wie ist die feministische Debatte um den New Materialism aufgebaut? Dafür wird eine aktuelle Debatte, die 2008 beginnt und von fünf feministischen Theoretiker_innen (Sara Ahmed, Noela Davis, Nikki Sullivan, Myra Hird und Iris Van der Tuin) aus verschiedenen Disziplinen und Denkschulen geführt wird, analysiert.
Diese Debatte wird anhand eines selbst entwickelten sechsteiligen Kategoriensystems systematisch und meta-diskursiv geordnet. Ich lehne mich methodisch am Verfahren der qualitativen Inhaltsanalyse an und lege genau dar, wie ich dieses nutze, um die Sinnstrukturen der Texte freizulegen. Die sechs Elemente sind Startpunkt der Textanalyse, aber gleichermaßen auch Ergebnis meiner Auseinandersetzung mit dem Textcorpus. Sie werden als Fäden konzeptioniert und sollen die Textbestandteile zu folgenden Themen aufspüren: Disziplinen und ihre Grenzen; Biologie-Kritik und Biologie-Affirmation; Haltung zu Paradigmen; Konzeption des Verhältnisses von Materie und Diskurs; Umgang mit dem Menschlichem; Neuartigkeit des Forschungsfeldes. Diese sechs Fäden werden ausgewertet, interpretiert und es werden Schlussfolgerungen aus ihnen gezogen. Weiterhin wird der Schwerpunkt der einzelnen Positionen der Autor_innen herausgearbeitet. Ich zeige auch, welche Fäden gemeinsam auftreten, welche Inhalte die Autor_in gemeinsam argumentiert. Es werden Verbindungslinien zwischen den einzelnen Positionen sichtbar gemacht, Bezüge untereinander aufgezeigt, Widersprüche versammelt, gemeinsame Quellen herausgearbeitet und der strategische Einsatz von theoretischen Schlüsselfiguren offen gelegt. Ziel ist es, eine Karte dieser komplexen Debatte zu erstellen und die Relevanz des New Materialism für feministische Theorie zu erforschen.
Ich werde darstellen dass diese kontroverse Debatte geprägt ist von Missverstehen, identitätslogischen Abgrenzungen, Lagerbildungen und gegenseitigen Anschuldigungen. Die Arbeit soll die Positionen in einen produktiven Austausch miteinander bringen, indem sie die inhaltlichen Schwerpunkte freilegt, die entweder explizit oder implizit thematisiert werden, um damit hinter die Text-Ebene zu treten und eine Verständigung zu ermöglichen. Damit soll ein Beitrag geleistet werden, um die Polarisierung von essentialistischen und konstruktivistischen Ansätzen innerhalb feministischer Theoriebildung zu überwinden.

The conflictual relationship between matter and discourse and between social construction and materiality has a long history within the formation of feminist theory. This Master's thesis explores the research field of New Materialism, which provides the possibility to redefine these "traditional" dichotomies and to operate at their boundaries. It is thus located at the junction of philosophy, feminist theory and scientific research.
To begin with, the research field's disciplinary heritage will be portrayed, the concept of New Materialism will be reflected upon, the development within feminist theory will be presented and the characteristics of this heterogeneous research field will be collected.
The aim of this work is to analyze current feminist positions within New Materialism: How is the feminist debate of New Materialism set up? For this purpose, the current debate, which started in 2008 and is led by five feminist theoreticians (Sara Ahmed, Noela Davis, Nikki Sullivan, Myra Hird and Iris Van der Tuin) from different disciplines and schools of thought, will be analyzed.
This debate will be organized meta-discursively and systematically on the basis of a self-developed system of six categories. Methodically, I will be using a qualitative content analysis and will precisely describe my methodology for revealing the structural logic of the text. The six elements are the starting point of the textual analysis, but at the same time they are also the result of the work with the text body. They will be conceptualized as threads and are supposed to follow the components of the text in regards to the following themes: disciplines and their boundaries; critique and affirmation of biology ; attitude towards paradigms; conception of the relation between matter and discourse; approach to the humane; the novelty of the research field. These six threads will be evaluated, interpreted and conclusions will be drawn from them. Furthermore, the main foci of the authors' individual positions will be worked out. I will also show which threads appear together and which content is reasoned together by the author. Lines of intersections will be made visible, relations illustrated, contradictions gathered, joint sources worked out and the strategic use of theoretical key figures disclosed. The goal is to create a map of the complex debate and to explore the relevance of New Materialism for feminist theory.
I will illustrate that this controversial debate is shaped by misunderstandings, demarcations based on identity, formations of factions and accusations. The thesis is supposed to bring the positions into a productive exchange with one another, by disclosing the main substantive focuses, which are either explicitly or implicitly addressed, in order to go beyond the textual level and enable a common understanding. This thesis should thus be seen as a contribution to overcoming the polarization between essentialist and constructivist approaches within feminist theory.
