Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The present paper deals with humour translation in film dubbing. Due to the complexity of humour and the polysemiotic nature of audiovisual texts, humour translation in film dubbing represents a huge challenge. The film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” and its Italian dubbed version serve as an example to illustrate the possibilities and the limits of the translation and adaptation of English humour. The present Master’s thesis consists of six chapters. The first chapter presents the theories and concepts of translation science that build the theoretical background of the present thesis. These include Reiß’s and Vermeer’s skopos theory, Holz-Mänttari’s theory of translational action and Ammann’s model of translation critique. Fillmore’s scenes-and-frames semantics and Eco’s concept of the "model reader" will be described as well. The second chapter deals with humour and its translation. The existing humour theories and humour analysis models as well as the most important humour forms will be presented. In this chapter special attention is paid to the incongruity theory and to Brock’s model of incongruity analysis. Chapter three is dedicated to audiovisual translation. It provides first of all an overview of the development and evolution of audiovisual translation; subsequently the complexity of the film medium will be discussed and special focus will be laid on film dubbing and its challenges. Chapter four presents the comic group Monty Python and the film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail”. In chapter five follows the analysis according to Ammann’s model of translation critique and to Brock’s model of humour analysis. In the sixth and last chapter the results of the analysis are discussed and it is determined whether the skopos has been fulfilled and how English humour has been adapted to the target audience.
