Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This master thesis studies the urban development in the area around the newly built Hauptbahnhof Wien, the central railway station of Vienna. Besides the central station, high-quality office areas and residential houses have been planned and built. Most of the residences are government-funded and they are conceived as part of a social housing plan. To estimate the degree of social integration of the residents in the newly created housing area (Sonnwendviertel) with its neighboring quarter (Favoriten), a spatial analysis has been conducted. The theoretical part studies global developments (technological and social change, contemporary capitalism) in respect to Vienna. The empirical part presents a milieu study about the spatial dimension using a mixed methods design consisting of the map pin method and semi-structured interviews. Different perceptions of space have been investigated in regard to the educational level, age, milieu and residential district of the interviewees. The spatial behavior (visited places, quality and features of the visited places) of the new inhabitants diverges from that of the old inhabitants, which indicates that social integration will not happen spontaneously. There is however a chance that an intermediate milieu, the integration milieu, could form a bridge between the opposing poles. Nevertheless, it's unlikely that social integration will happen without outside promotion and stimulation.
