"The Sound of Music" gilt als einer der erfolgreichsten Filme aller Zeiten. Als Verfilmung des ebenso erfolgreichen Broadway-Musicals gewann er nicht nur fünf Oscars sondern erreichte auch sagenhafte Einspielergebnisse. Dass das Musical auf dem deutschen Erfolgsfilm "Die Trapp Familie" basiert ist eher unbekannt. Noch unbekannter ist hingegen, dass es eine englische Synchronfassung – "The Trapp Family" gibt, die sich wiederum als Zusammenschnitt von "Die Trapp Familie" und dessen Fortsetzung "Die Trapp Familie in Amerika" entpuppt.
Die Arbeit setzt sich mit der Frage auseinander unter welchen wirtschaftlichen, filmpolitischen und rechtlichen Voraussetzungen der Trapp-Stoff in ein Musical transformiert werden konnte. Sie konzentriert sich auf urheberrechtliche Fragestellungen, aber auch die deutsche Filmgeschichte der Nachkriegszeit sowie der Export deutscher Filme.
Ein Ziel ist es herauszufinden, wie die die Rechte an "Die Trapp Familie" verkauft wurden und wer an dem lukrativen Deal beteiligt war, der zur Produktion des Musicals "The Sound of Music" führte. Ein weiteres Ziel ist die detaillierte Analyse der englischen Synchronfassung "The Trapp Family".

"The Sound of Music" is one of the most successful films of all time. As film version of the equally successful Broadway musical it won five Oscars and reached fabulous box-office results. The fact that the musical is based on the German film-success "Die Trapp Familie" is rather unknown. Unheard-of is that there is an English dubbed version – "The Trapp Family" which turns out to be a compilation of "Die Trapp Familie" and its sequal "Die Trapp Familie in Amerika".
The thesis deals with the question under which economic, filmpolitical and legal circumstances the story about the Trapp family could be transformed into a musical. It focuses on copyright, as well as German filmhistory of the post-war period and the export of German films. One aim is to find out how the rights on "Die Trapp Familie" where traded and who was involved in the profitable deal that led to the production the musical "The Sound of Music". Another goal is the detailed analysis of the English dubbed filmversion "The Trapp Family".
