Ausgangspunkt für diese Arbeit war mein Interesse, einen unbefriedigenden, weil sehr vage gefassten und von Steven Marcus vor allem narratologisch bestimmten Pornotopia-Begriff genauer zu untersuchen und auszudifferenzieren. Zumal pornografische Filme weniger von besonders ausgefeilten Erzählungen, sondern mehr durch eine spezifische Filmräumlichkeit bestimmt sind (die mitunter zu einer Verräumlichung von Körpern führt), wurde Pornotopia wörtlich genommen, und exemplarische Filme werden in Bezug auf Raum und Ort hin untersucht. Die für die Analyse ausgewählten Filme inszenieren ihre pornografischen Aktionen in konkreten Städten, und die Schauplätze sind stark von den Charakteristiken der jeweiligen Stadt und den Imaginationen über sie geprägt. Somit stellen die drei Analysebeispiele auch eine Antithese zu Steven Marcus’ Feststellung von den nicht genau bestimmbaren Orten und der ›blassen Topographie‹ von Pornografie dar. Die Filmbeispiele sind alle zeitgenössische Hardcore-Pornos und für ein breiteres Publikum ausgelegt. In ihrer Ästhetik (Chic vs. Trash), in der Narration (Feature vs. Gonzo) und in den sexuellen Praktiken (heterosexuell mit Elementen weiblicher Bisexualität vs. All-male) unterscheiden sie sich allerdings stark voneinander.
Für die Untersuchung eines räumlich gefassten Pornotopia werden drei Ebenen der Raumproduktion unterschieden: (1) die medien- und genrespezifische; (2) die symbolische und materielle; (3) die soziale Dimension der Raumproduktion. Entlang dieser Auffächerung und mit Hilfe der Kategorien Schauplatz (Ort/place) und Handlungsraum (Raum/space) findet eine Annäherung an den Aufbau und die Funktion von Ort, Raum und Räumlichkeit im pornografischen Hardcore-Film statt.
Kapitel 1 versucht eine Positionsbestimmung innerhalb des Feldes der Porn Studies, außerdem werden Forschungsfragen sowie theoretische Anknüpfungspunkte herausgearbeitet. Kapitel 2 beschreibt Duktus und Plot der Filmbeispiele. Die Analyse medialer Architekturen in Form der filmischen Räumlichkeit und der Inszenierung von Körper als Schauplatz sind Thema von Kapitel 3. Mit den Darstellungen von Stadt, den »real-and-imagined places« der Filme beschäftigt sich Kapitel 4, die allgemeine Produktion von Urbanität einerseits und die Inszenierung der konkreten Städte Wien, Berlin und Moskau andererseits werden untersucht. Kapitel 5 beschäftigt sich mit dem Handlungsraum und den Praktiken des Bewohnens während und abseits des Sex. Abschließend werden die Ergebnisse zusammengeführt und es wird herausgearbeitet, inwieweit das Pornotopia in den analysierten Beispielen an Ort, Raum und Räumlichkeit geknüpft ist.

The title of my diploma thesis roughly translates as: »Which Way to Pornotopia? Places and Spaces in Pornographic Films Amongst Body and City«.
The starting point of this thesis was my interest in a closer examination and differentiation of Steven Marcus’ concept of pornotopia, which is somewhat unsatisfactory as it is vague and only narratologically determined. Since pornographic films are less shaped by particularly sophisticated stories but rather by a specific spatiality (which may lead to a spatialization of bodies), the term pornotopia was taken literally. For three exemplary porn films, their relation to space and place was examined. The selected films stage their pornographic activities in specific cities and their locations are strongly shaped by the characteristics and imaginings of those cities. Hence these films also present an antithesis to Steven Marcus’ statement about porn taking place in undetermined places and within rather colorless topographies. All three analyzed films were produced for a wide audience. However, they show marked differences in their aesthetics (chic vs. trash), in the narration (feature vs. gonzo), and in the sexual practices (heterosexual with elements of female bisexuality vs. all-male).
In order to investigate the spatial constitution of pornotopia, three levels of the production of space are distinguished: (1) the media and genre-specific dimension; (2) the symbolic and material dimension; (3) the social dimension. This outline instructs an attempt at grasping the structure and function of place, space and spatiality within hardcore porn.
Chapter 1 attempts a positioning within the field of Porn Studies, while also framing the research questions as well as links to other theoretical fields. The styles and plots of the film examples are outlined in Chapter 2. The analysis of medial architectures in terms of cinematic space and the staging of bodies as locations are at issue in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 is devoted to the representations of the cities, the real-and-imagined-places of the films. These are examined, on the one hand, in terms of a general production of urbanity, and, on the other hand, in terms of the staging of specific cities (Vienna, Berlin and Moscow). Spaces of action and practices of habitation (during and apart of sex) are the subject of Chapter 5. In conclusion, the results are merged and the extent to which pornotopia is linked to place, space and spatiality within the analyzed examples is reexamined.
