Die weibliche Brust ist ein Körperteil von großer Bedeutung. Ihre Funktion im Prozess der Fortpflanzung, sowie ihr Stellenwert in der Gesellschaft machen den Busen zu einem Symbol für Weiblichkeit, dem im Theater als Inszenierungselement viel Aufmerksamkeit zukommt. Im ersten Teil dieser Arbeit wird die Bedeutung des Körpers und der Brust im Theater erläutert. Im nächsten Teil werden die wichtigsten Bedeutungsvarianten, das Nährende, das Erotische und das Schlechte, herausgearbeitet. Im letzten Abschnitt werden die zuvor genannten Aspekte in ihrer Anwendung bei der Inszenierung des Busens auf der Bühne anhand von Beispielen verdeutlicht. Die Auswirkungen, die das Präsentieren der Brust auf das Theaterpublikum hat, beeinflussen die Wahrnehmung der gesamten Produktion.

The female breast is an important part of the body. Its function in the process of reproduction, as well as its significance in society makes the bosom a symbol for femininity that attracts much attention when used as a tool for theatre productions. The first part of this thesis introduces the importance and meaning of the body and the breast on stage. The following part explains the most important versions of the breasts’ meaning; the nourishing, the erotic aspect and the connotation to the evil. In the last part of the thesis, these aspects of meaning are used to interpret the various ways in which the female breast is presented on stage. Examples of different theatre productions serve as material to proof that the breast is an important tool of sensual association in the staging of performances and is intentionally used as such. Its effect on the audience plays an important role in the way the whole production is perceived.
