Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract

My thesis The diffusion of reality in film and theater looks to answer the question if there is is another categorization of the definition of the theatric-movie, besides the ones of Susanne Marschall, due to the fusion of reality in film and the world of theater. A discussion of the two transitory forms of presentation shows in which form theater and film are codependent since the early years of film with the birth of cinema. A further step will analyse the similarities and differences of the showcasing method in theater and film. In this step technical differences will be covered as well as differences and mutual aspects in production and viewer perception. This section is followed by showcasing the difficulties in the general definition of the theatric-movie. In the following pages the current groupings of theatric-movies are introduced and concluded by highlighting the thesis as basis of the key hypothesis. As evidence of the assumption that a separate grouping-mechanism can be set for the theatric-movie, based on the diffusion of reality in film and the world of theater, I will utilize the movie To Be or Not to Be by Ernst Lubitsch (USA, 1942) as example and will examine the piece regarding the fusion of theatrical and non-theatrical levels and elements in the light of the central thesis. Additionally this thesis covers the life of Ernst Lubitsch showcasing the strong personal influence of theater and movie. For this analysis, the key development stages of his career are analyzed. This begins with his desire to become an actor to the first contact with theater ,reaching his works in film in Germany and finally Hollywood. For the general understanding of the movie To Be or Not to Be you can find a synopsis of the story. The sequential protocol that can be found in the appendix can be utilized for support and general overview of the following movie-analysis. In the movie-analysis my focus is the key inquiry of this thesis and I am utilizing the tools of movie-analysis to identify proof of my underlying hypothesis. The construction of two distinct scenes appears of particular importance in my view. Continuing there is a character analysis, where the unique characteristics of the protagonists help to describe situations which justify the fusion of the theatrical and non theatrical levels. Following this thesis covers an analysis of the historical background during the creation of the film „To Be or Not to Be“ and the close relation to the theme that is covered in the film. This connection will be utilized in a comparison to Fritz Kortner with the values and norms of the film. In conclusion I will explain in the resume if the hypothesis regarding the separate grouping of the theatric-movie by focus on reality in film and the world of theater is answered and which further methods of examination could follow this analysis.
