Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This research examines related themes in character highlights; love, conflicts and fights, death and loss and various expressions that prove through analysis the existence of the parallels between two important eras in the history of film. The first era that is discussed deals with two Hollywood films from the 1930’s, Hollywood’s socalled Golden Era. The movies analyzed are Mark Steiner’s King Kong and Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s The Adventures of Robin Hood. The qualities of both films are compared in detail to two Hollywood movies of today. Moreover, new elements surface in the second film era of the present and the old films are compared with two newer examples – two films scored by John Williams: Star Wars: A New Hope and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Through these cinematic examples (all of which belong to the action/adventure genre) it is discovered that love is portrayed through music and exists in all four films. In the two newer films, love is not represented uniformly and is presented in a more modern light. Additionally, conflicts and fights are presented in varying fashion in each of the four films, and they change musically as well as dramaturgically. In Star Wars, conflicts and fights are represented by more realistic-sounding effects, whereas in Harry Potter they are developed more slowly. The connecting factor is brought to light when dealing with death and loss in that we discover how important death and loss are as a theme and that they serve a similar purpose – karma. Furthermore, the research discusses the important elements of musically-supported expressions (human as well as nonhuman). Special examples of these expressions are also discussed in Harry Potter. These examples adhere to a new – magical – method of expression.
