Aravind Adigas The White Tiger (zu Deutsch Der Weiße Tiger) (2008) rief eine bemerkenswert kontroverse Debatte unter Literaturkritikern in Indien sowie im internationalen Umfeld hervor. In seinem Roman bricht Adiga absichtlich mit dem romantischen Mythos des exotischen Indiens und präsentiert ein ungeschmücktes und ehrliches Bild der aktuellen indischen Gesellschaft. Diese Diplomarbeit ist ein wertvoller Beitrag zu der andauernden Debatte, indem sie die Darstellung Indiens in The White Tiger mit mehreren soziologischen und sozialhistorischen Quellen vergleicht, welche die indische Gesellschaft des 21. Jahrhunderts zu definieren versuchen.
Mittels einer narratologischen Analyse des Romans erfasst diese Diplomarbeit den Grad der Authentizität der, mit dem Booker Prize 2008 ausgezeichneten, Erzählung. Eine Analyse der Erzähl- sowie Handlungsebene des Romans bietet eine detaillierte Charakterisierung der Hauptpersonen und bestimmt die wichtigsten Themen, Motive und Probleme der Erzählung. Der Grad der Authentizität von The White Tiger wird sowohl anhand der, für den Roman relevanten, indischen Geschichte als auch der aktuellen Gesellschaft festgestellt und mit dem sozialhistorischen und soziokulturellen Hintergrund Indiens verglichen. Außerdem befasst sich die Diplomarbeit mit der Anwendbarkeit des Romans im Kontext des österreichischen AHS Oberstufenunterrichts. Die Bewertung des Potenzials als Lehrmaterial erfolgt aufgrund des offiziellen Themenpools für die neue standardisierte Reifeprüfung (2014/15).
Typische Merkmale der gegenwärtigen indischen Gesellschaft umfassen die Vielfalt der Religionen sowie die sich daraus ergebenden Konflikte zwischen Hindus und Muslimen, die strenge Kasten- und Klassenhierarchie, die vorherrschende Geschlechterungleichheit, die enorme Armut, Irregularitäten in Indiens Sozialsystem, sowie die korrupte Politik. Einige dieser Aspekte können historisch erklärt werden, aufgrund der langen Fremdherrschaft in Indien und des daraus resultierenden demokratischen Systems, in welchem materieller Reichtum über die Rechte und Pflichten eines Individuums bestimmt. Ein Vergleich dieser Aspekte mit Adigas Darstellung von Indien zeigt, dass The White Tiger ein durchaus realistisches Bild der indischen Gesellschaft darlegt. Dennoch weist der Roman einige unmaßgebliche Übertreibungen und Abweichungen auf, die vermutlich aus künstlerischen Gründen entstanden sind. In Bezug auf das didaktische Potenzial ist anzumerken, dass 20 der 24 vorgeschlagenen Themen für die neue standardisierte Reifeprüfung in Adigas Erzählung enthalten sind, wodurch sich der Roman als äußerst adäquates Lehrmaterial für den österreichischen Englischunterricht erweist.
Daher kann aufgrund der Analyse in dieser Diplomarbeit argumentiert werden, dass die Anschuldigungen gegen Adiga, ein einseitiges Bild von Indien darzustellen, zurückgewiesen werden können.

Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger (2008) has created a considerable degree of controversy among literary scholars in India as well as on an international scale. Adiga deliberately breaks with the romanticized myth of Exotic India and portrays an unvarnished and honest picture of contemporary Indian society. This thesis presents a valuable contribution to the ongoing debate by comparing the author’s depiction of India with a number of sociological and socio-historical sources that try to define 21st century Indian society.
By drawing on the narratological analysis of the 2008 Booker prize-winning novel, this thesis deconstructs the novel’s highly debated authenticity value. An analysis of the ‘discourse’ as well as ‘story level’ offers detailed characterizations of the story’s main personae and identifies the narrative’s major themes, motifs and problems. The preceding surveys of India’s history and contemporary society provide the socio-historical and sociocultural context, whereby the novel’s degree of authenticity is established. Moreover, the thesis discusses The White Tiger’s potential for teaching in the Austrian upper secondary EFL classroom. The assessment of the novel’s potential as teaching material is based on the official pool of topics for the new oral standardized AHS Matura (2014/15).
Characterizing features of contemporary Indian society include the diversity in religions as well as the resulting conflicts between Hindus and Muslims, the strict caste and class hierarchies, the prevailing gender inequality, tremendous poverty, inequalities in the country’s welfare system, as well as corrupt and fraudulent politics. A number of these aspects can be explained historically, due to India’s long period of foreign domination and the subsequent establishment of its democratic system, in which material wealth seems to determine an individual’s rights and duties. A comparison of these aspects to Adiga’s portrayal of contemporary India shows that The White Tiger does present a realistic depiction of Indian society, despite minor exaggerations and digressions due to artistic reasons. As far as the novel’s potential for teaching is concerned, 20 out of 24 suggested topics for the new oral AHS Matura can be applied to The White Tiger, which qualifies the novel as a highly suitable reading material for the Austrian EFL classroom. Hence, it can be argued that the accusations against Adiga of portraying a unilateral picture of India can be dismissed on the basis of the analysis presented in this thesis.
