Abstract
(Deutsch)
der New Economics of Labour Migration Remigration als bewusst entschiedene
Haushaltsstrategie.
Abstract
(Englisch)
The British Institute for Public Policy Research stated in early 2008, that half of the
Poles, who came to Britain following the EU-accession Polands in 2004, already
returned home. This trend is formed by the economic development, the legal
framework, which is characterized by the European freedom of movement, the role of
politics like the Polish government, which tries to lure back Poles with supportive
measures, and by social phenomena like the development of a migrant community. The
main interest of this master thesis lies within the situation and motives of polish
returnees. The individualised level of polish remigration can be examined on the basis
of polish weblogs on remigration. Theories about migration, mobility and remigration
point to different motives for return. Hence the development of a high mobility, of
transnational identities and social networks can lead to return migration. In accordance
with the neoclassical economy theory return is the consequence of a failed migration
experience. In contrast to this the New Economics of Labour Migration believes it to be
a strategic measure decided by households. There are some push- and pull-factors as
well as micro- and macro-aspects, which form the dynamics of international migration
and remigration. It is up to the empirical findings to identify the dominant factors. On
the basis of the qualitative content analysis a categorical system according to the
deductively derived hypothesises is developed, which serves the analysis of the weblog
postings. Dominant motives of polish returnees can be detected in an individual
calculation of costs and benefits, which weighs up subjective and objective arguments,
and in the development of transnational identities.
