Gegenstand der vorliegenden Masterarbeit ist eine terminologische Untersuchung zu den drei Themenbereichen Umwelt, Umweltbeeinträchtigung und Unfälle. Ihren Ursprung nahm diese Ausarbeitung in einem Terminologieprojekt, im Zuge dessen im Rahmen einer Lehrveranstaltung am Zentrum für Translationswissenschaft der Universität Wien im Auftrag der österreichischen Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft (ASFINAG) systematisch Termini des Fachgebiets Straßenverkehr und Straßenbau bearbeitet wurden. Diese Arbeit ist eine Erweiterung des Projekts und beruht daher auf einem konkreten Arbeitsauftrag, der darin besteht, ein zweisprachiges (deutsch-englisches) Glossar zu den Themen Umwelt, Umweltbeeinträchtigung und Unfälle zu liefern. In einem ersten Schritt wird dazu der derzeitige Stand der Terminologiearbeit im Bereich Umwelt beleuchtet – dies umfasst sowohl eine kurze Präsentation jener Organisationen, die für die Terminologiesammlungen verantwortlich zeichnen, als auch eine Erläuterung ihrer Terminologie sowie ein Vergleich der beschriebenen Quellen. Im Hauptteil dieser Masterarbeit folgt schließlich die praktisch orientierte terminologische Untersuchung. Hierfür dient die online verfügbare Terminologiesammlung der World Road Association als wichtigste Informationsquelle – vorhandene Termini werden überprüft und neue Termini bzw. Synonyme sowie Definitionen werden hinzugefügt. Um die Benennungen im Kontext darzustellen, wird dieses Glossar durch aktuelle, für die ASFINAG relevante Daten, Fakten und Entwicklungen ergänzt. Die vorliegende Masterarbeit dient somit als praktisch erarbeitete Illustration der Bedeutung von Terminologiearbeit – einerseits für Unternehmen wie die ASFINAG, für die eine einheitliche Unternehmensterminologie für die interne und externe Kommunikation äußerst wertvoll ist, andererseits für Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer, für die eine korrekt verwendete Terminologie zu Qualitätssteigerung und erhöhter Akzeptanz und Verständlichkeit ihrer Übersetzungen sorgt.

The aim of this Master’s thesis is to examine the terminology of the three subject areas environment, nuisance, and accidents. This elaboration originated in a terminology project conducted by several students of the Center for Translation Studies at the University of Vienna. By order of ASFINAG (Autobahnen- und Schnellstraßen-Finanzierungs-Aktiengesellschaft, responsible for planning, building, and maintaining the Austrian road network), a terminology in the fields of road traffic and road construction was worked on. This thesis is an expansion of this project and is, therefore, based on a specific assignment to deliver a bilingual (German-English) glossary for the topics environment, nuisance, and accidents. To this end, the current state of terminology work concerning environment is analyzed as a first step. This includes a short presentation of organizations that created existing terminology databases as well as a description of these collections and a comparison of them. The main part of this Master’s thesis focuses on examining the terminology of the above mentioned subject areas. The most important source of information for this part is the online terminology database of the World Road Association. The contents of this database are checked for correctness and timeliness and new terms, synonyms, and definitions are added. To make these terms more comprehensible they are explained in context—i.e. the glossary is complemented by current facts and developments of interest for ASFINAG. Thereby, this thesis illustrates the significance of terminology work. On the one hand, a consistent company terminology is very valuable for companies like ASFINAG for internal and external communication purposes. On the other hand, a correctly used terminology helps translators improve the quality of their translations and at the same makes their texts more understandable and acceptable.
