Die Arbeit nähert sich einem Thema, das im Zuge des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils zwar große Aufmerksamkeit erlangte, in den letzten Jahren in der theologischen Forschung jedoch wieder weniger Widerhall gefunden hat – der Frage des gemeinsamen Priestertums aller Gläubigen und seines Verhältnisses zum besonderen Priestertum, in das man durch die Weihe von Jesus Christus berufen wird. In einem ersten Hauptteil wird der Weg, den diese Lehre genommen hat, nachgezeichnet. Ausgehend von einer Analyse der Situation am Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts steht zunächst die Aufbruchbewegung und das Entstehen einer neuen Theologie des gemeinsamen Priestertums aller Gläubigen bis zum Vorabend des Konzils im Vordergrund, um schließlich einen Blick auf die Entwicklung vom vorbereiteten Schema „De Ecclesia“ zur dogmatischen Konstitution „Lumen Gentium“ zu werfen. Diese bringt die Diskussionen in der Nr. 10 zu einem Abschluss und Höhepunkt, indem sie feststellt, dass es sich beim Verhältnis des besonderen zum gemeinsamen Priestertum um eine Unterscheidung „zwar dem Wesen und nicht bloß dem Grade nach“ handelt. Der zweite Hauptteil widmet sich der nachkonziliaren Rezeption des gemeinsamen Priestertums aller Gläubigen. Exemplarisch werden dazu vier Autoren – Walter Kardinal Kasper, Gisbert Greshake, Joseph Kardinal Ratzinger und Karl-Heinz Menke – zunächst in den Grundzügen ihres Denkens und schließlich genauer im Hinblick auf ihre Sichtweise zum gemeinsamen Priestertum und seines Verhältnisses zum besonderen Priestertum vorgestellt. Die Reihenfolge der Autoren entspricht hierbei dem Versuch einer inhaltlichen Gliederung der Ansätze entsprechend des Zugangs von einem funktional (Kasper) bis zu einem sakramental (Menke) orientierten Ansatz. Eine abschließende Zusammenfassung und kritische Rückfrage greift die jeweiligen Positionen auf, bringt sie ins Gespräch und weist auf mögliche problematische Engführungen hin. Der letzte Teil der Arbeit soll das Themenfeld auf zukünftige Forschungen hin öffnen. So werden zunächst vier Grundpfeiler für eine neue Theologie des gemeinsamen Priestertums identifiziert und schließlich ausgehend von diesen eine neue Verhältnisbestimmung des gemeinsamen und besonderen Priestertums versucht. Ein praktisches Beispiel zu einer ganzheitlichen Umsetzung des neuen Miteinanders bietet der Hirtenbrief zum Diözesanprozess „Apostelgeschichte 2010“ von Christoph Kardinal Schönborn in der Erzdiözese Wien, der zugleich den Abschluss der Arbeit bildet.

The thesis approaches a topic that gained much attention during the Second Vatican Council but has since not received many echoes – the doctrine of the common priesthood of the faithful and its relationship to the ordained priesthood to which one is called by Jesus Christ. The first main part of the thesis shows the way this doctrine had taken during the years. Starting with an analysis of the situation at the end of the 19th century attention is then drawn to new movements and the development of a new theology of the common priesthood up to the eve of the Second Vatican Council. From there the development of the Council’s documents – starting from the prepared scheme “De Ecclesia” leading up to the dogmatic constitution “Lumen Gentium” – is taken into sight. “Lumen Gentium” cumulates all discussions in its no. 10 where it is stated that the difference between the common and the ordained priesthood is to be found to “differ from one another in essence and not only in degree”. In the second main part, the theology of the common priesthood of the faithful after the Second Vatican Council gets in focus. As an example four theologians – Walter Cardinal Kasper, Gisbert Greshake, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger and Karl-Heinz Menke – are presented, wherein the ordering of the authors is an attempt to organise them with regards to the content. Starting from a rather functional approach (Kasper) the positions lead up to a sacramental approach (Menke). After having outlined the main theological positions an analysis is conducted to extract the respective view of the common priesthood of all faithful. The final summary combined with further enquiries puts the different positions in dialogue and points out possible inaccuracies. The last part of the thesis tries to open the topic for further investigations. Therefore four main keystones that are to be respected in a new theology of the common priesthood of all faithful are outlined and – based on these keystones – a new approach to the relationship between the common and the ordained priesthood is presented. Finally, as a practical example of what has been worked out in this last part, the pastoral letter of Christoph Cardinal Schönborn in occasion of the pastoral process “Acts of the Apostles 2010” within the Archdiocese of Vienna is presented as an example of this new way of thinking the common priesthood of all faithful and the ordained priesthood together.
