Die Meldung des neuen Turkish Stream Projekts, welches das South Stream Projekt ersetzen soll, kam als Überraschung für viele in der Welt des Gas Marktes. Russlands Geduld mit der Ukraine sowie mit Europa war aufgebraucht und so hat Russland sich einen neuen Partner mit der Türkei ausgesucht. Zu viele Probleme mit der Ukraine und ein nicht-kooperatives Europa zwangen Russland zu der Entscheidung ein neues Projekt anzugehen. Es gibt viele Gründe hierfür und die meisten lassen sich in der komplizierten Beziehung zwischen Russland und Europa finden.
Diese Arbeit beschreibt den europäischen Gas Markt, bevor sie einen Vergleich zwischen Russland und Europa anstellt wie beide ihren eigenen Gas Markt führen. Diese Arbeit beschreibt dann die komplizierte Beziehung zwischen Europa und Russland indem sie nicht nur auf ökonomische Faktoren Rücksicht nimmt, sondern auch geopolitische Faktoren mit einbezieht. Die Schwierigkeit Gas zu transportieren führt zu Konflikten zwischen dem Land, welches Gas transportieren möchte und dem Land, durch welches das Gas fließen soll. Hier beschreibt die Arbeit zwei Fallstudien, welche das Verständnis für diese Art von Konflikten erleichtern sollen. Daraufhin konzentriert sich die Arbeit auf die Ereignisse und die geopolitischen Faktoren, welche zum neuen Turkish Stream Projekt geführt haben, bevor sie die Gewinne analysiert welche Russland und die Türkei durch das neue Projekt machen können. Hierfür vergleicht diese Arbeit drei verschiedene Szenarien und beschreibt wie die verschiedenen Ergebnisse Europa beeinflussen.

The news of the Turkish Stream project, replacing the South Stream project, came unexpected to the world of the natural gas market. Russia’s patience with the Ukraine and also with Europe had come to an end and so Russia had found a new ally with Turkey. Too many problems with the Ukraine and a non-cooperative Europe led to the decision of the new project with Turkey. The reasons behind this change of mind of Russia are manifold and can be found in its relationship with Europe.
This paper describes the European natural gas market, before comparing how Europe and Russia handle their natural gas markets respectively. The paper then analyzes the complicated relationship between Europe and Russia concerning the natural gas market, focusing not just on economics, but also on geopolitics. It shows that the difficult transportation system for natural gas leads to transit games, for which two case studies have been described. The paper then concentrates itself on the history and the geopolitics leading to the Turkish Stream project and investigates the profits that Russia and Turkey can make from the Turkish Stream project. It also compares three different scenarios and shows how these different outcomes will affect Europe. In fact the paper takes a look at the transit game involving Russia, Turkey and Europe.
