Abstract

Cultural PR of the Burgtheater in Public Service Broadcasting
The objective of the present master’s thesis is to examine the “below-the-line” cultural public relations activities of the Burgtheater in terms of the relationship between the theater and Austria’s national public broadcaster, the ORF. This includes highlighting the channels that
connect the Burgtheater’s public relations staff and the cultural journalists of the ORF, which leads in to a discussion of historically grounded symbolic content along with the theater’s present-day cultural PR work via the ORF’s television and radio stations.
The investigation of the objects to be researched deals both with the Burgtheater’s public relations activities and with the ORF, specifically the radio station Ö1, ORF television’s cultural news reporting in general, and the television station ORF III in particular. The attendant theoretical considerations will include examination of the definitions of public relations, radio and television as media, and culture as such.
As part of the empirical investigation, four cultural journalists each from ORF television and Ö1 as well as representatives of the Burgtheater’s Press Office were interviewed concerning the Federal Act on the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF Act), ORF reporting on the Burgtheater, and the Burgtheater’s PR measures with a focus on the two organizations’ mutual relationships. The interviews were conducted, transcribed, and evaluated based on Mayring’s theory of qualitative social research. The findings indicate that the relationship between the Burgtheater and the ORF’s cultural journalists is characterized by a high degree of professionalism, respect, and objectivity. And in this context, the relevant historically rooted symbolic content continues to be of consequence in the relationship between these two institutions and to enjoy a commensurate presence in the associated media, thus making an essential contribution to the basis of the Burgtheater’s cultural PR work.
