Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The aim of this paper is to show the role of the city museum in the city which has been going through the dramatic restructuring process under the influence of globalization by examining which images of the city are more strongly represented at city museums: the image of the commodified city (the city’s brand image) and the image of the city as the life space of residents. After the examination of theories and concepts of globalization, the city and the museum, I analysed both temporary and permanent exhibitions at three city museums in Vienna, London and Tokyo between the 1980 and 2013 in order to see how each museum imagines and represents the city using qualitative content analyses. The results of the research show that the city museum of the most globalized city, London, represents the least the brand image of the city, while the city museums in Vienna and Tokyo tend to represent more the brand image of the city than the city as the life space of residents. These results are explained in relation to the two characteristics identified in the theories of globalization, cannibalization of global and local and individualization, and in relation to Appadurai’s concept of the 5-scapes, which enables to elucidate how the image of the city represented in a city museum are influenced by global flows of people, capitals and ideas.
