Abstract

Zur Zeit ist ein Artikel ‘A thermodynamic study of the cadmium-neodymium system’ in Arbeit.
Abstract

Intermetallic compounds of the RE-Cd systems are of interest of the pyroprocessing technology of spent nuclear fuel. For better understanding and design of this recovery method the comprehensive knowledge of RE-Cd alloys and their thermodynamical properties are significant. The current work is
an evaluation of existing literature data on the constitution of the cerium-cadmium and the neodymium-cadmium systems supplemented by new experimental data filling the literature gaps.
The scope of the thesis is providing a detailed investigation of the cerium-cadmium and the neodymium-cadmium phase diagrams. Phase equilibria as well as structural characterization of the Ce-Cd and Nd-Cd alloys were studied. The both systems were investigated using light optical microscopy (LOM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in combination with EDS, powder X-Ray diffraction (XRD), differential thermal analysis (DTA) and dilatometric study. The isopiestic equilibration method was applied here to obtain a thermodynamical data.
The binary Ce-Cd phase diagram was re-evaluated over the whole composition range. Seven intermetallic compounds (CeCd, CeCd2, CeCd3, Ce13Cd58, CeCd6, Ce2Cd17 and CeCd11) and two solid solutions of Cd in the low- and high-temperature modification of Ce were confirmed. The phase boundaries of all phases were investigated at different temperatures. By means of DTA results the invariant reactions were determined. Moreover the melting and decomposition temperatures of the Ce-Cd phases were verified. Here some discrepancies with the existing literature data were recognized and the new temperatures were suggested.
In addition, it was possible to analyze structure of the high temperature phase Cd17+2xCe2-x (x ~ 0.02) (the hexagonal Th2Ni17 structure). A homogeneous single-phase sample was prepared what enables proposing the temperature range of existence of this intermetallic compound between 530 and 610 °C.
Thermodynamic activities of Cd were estimated for the Ce-Cd system in the temperature range between 690 and 1080 K and the composition range between 48 and 85 at.% Cd based on an isopiestic vapor pressure experiment. The activity values were converted to a common temperature of 823 K and are given for the composition range 48 to 100 at.% Cd. Using a literature value of ln aCe as integration constant, it was possible to calculate Ce activities and integral Gibbs energies of formation for the same temperature and composition range. A minimum of ΔfGCd = -37 kJ.g-atom-1 was calculated in the phase CeCd. A relatively high stability of Ce13Cd58 phase was noticed.
The complete Nd-Cd phase diagram was studied with a combination of thermal, metallographic and X-ray analysis over the whole composition range. The compounds are very similar to those found in the Ce-Cd system. Anyhow in the Cd-rich part some differences were noticed: the existence of the intermetallic compound Nd11Cd45 was confirmed but no high temperature phase was found. The crystal structure of following phases was investigated NdCd, NdCd2, NdCd3, Nd11Cd45, Nd13Cd58, NdCd6 and NdCd11. Additionally, melting or decomposition temperatures of all intermetallic compounds were recorded by DTA. The homogenity ranges of the both allotropic modification of Nd were determined. Based on the DTA and dilatometric results, the Nd-rich part of the binary diagram could be constructed. Similar to CeCd2 phase, a polymorphic modification of NdCd2 intermetallic compound was noticed.
At the moment the paper ‘A thermodynamic study of the cadmium-neodymium system’ is under construction. The measurements were carried out in the temperature range from about 690 to 1200 K and over a composition range between 48 and 92 at% Cd. A minimum value of ΔfG ≈ -38 kJ.g-atom-1 at 873 K was obtained for the phase CdNd, a value that compares well with other CdRE compounds.
