Filmmusik weist bereits im Namen auf die Verbindung zweier Kunstformen hin. Seit der Erfindung des Mediums Films dient die Musik als Begleitung und erhielt verschiedene Funktionen. Die Verbindung der beiden Elemente entstand aufgrund der räumlichen Gegebenheiten, wo das neue Medium um 1900 seinen Siegeszug begann. Beide künstlerischen Formen wurden zeitgleich dargeboten. Im Laufe der Zeit wurden die Vorteile und das Potenzial der Musik entdeckt, und die Musik bekam immer mehr Aufgaben, die sie für das Filmbild erfüllte. Seit der Erfindung des Tonfilms um 1930 ist das Vorführungssetting des Films mit dem heutigen vergleichbar, und die Live-Musik verschwand aus dem Kinosaal. Dennoch wurde sie lange Zeit ‚nur’ als Begleitmusik und im Vergleich zu Konzertmusik als minderwertig gesehen. Mit der Auseinandersetzung der Funktionen, Beziehungen und Aufgaben der Filmmusik stieg auch die Wertschätzung. Filmmusik wird in Konzertsälen gespielt, in Literatur behandelt und auf Tonträgern verkauft. In dem Vorführungssetting der Stummfilmjahre, mit der Besonderheit der Livemusik, liegt auch in der heutigen Zeit ein Reiz. Bei Stummfilmveranstaltungen wird versucht, die Musik wieder mehr in den Mittelpunkt zu rücken. Ebenso steigt die Zahl der Veranstaltungen, die einen Film mit der Live-Musik eines Orchesters darbieten. Hollywood in Vienna ist eine konzertante Veranstaltung, die sich der Filmmusik widmet und Filmmusik mittels Orchester auf die Bühne bringt. Die Filmmusikgala findet im Wiener Konzerthaus statt und das Radio Symphonie Orchester spielt unter der Leitung eines internationalen Filmmusikdirigenten. Im Vergleich zu anderen Veranstaltungsformen die live gespielte Filmmusik anbieten, wird bei dieser kein gesamter Film gezeigt. Dies wäre aufgrund der Musikauswahl gar nicht möglich und ist seitens der Veranstalter nicht gewünscht. Bei der Inszenierung von Filmmusik für Hollywood in Vienna wird dennoch nicht auf eine umfangreiche Visualisierung verzichtet. Diese setzt sich aus Animationen mit Motiven und Szenen aus den Filmen sowie einem Lichtkonzept zusammen.
Die vorliegende Arbeit geht der Frage nach, mit welchen Mitteln Filmmusik auf die Bühne gebracht wird. Warum braucht Hollywood in Vienna Visuals und steht dennoch die Filmmusik im Mittelpunkt?

The word film music already includes the connection of two different art forms. The musical accompaniment serves the film from the very beginning and got different functions. The connection of the two elements was due to the spatial conditions of the places where the new medium began its triumphal procession in 1900. Both art forms were presented simultaneously. In the course of time the potential of the connection and benefits of music were discovered. The music got more functions to support the moving pictures of the film. Since the invention of the talkies in 1930, the live-music was displaced from the cinemas. From that time on, the setting of the presentation of a film is similar with the one we are used to nowadays. Nevertheless, for a very long time film music was seen only as background music and side product of a film. Compared to classical concert it got less appreciation. Because of the academic discussions on film music’s functions and the relation between music and image the appreciation increased. Film music is played in concert halls, treated in literature and scores are sold on disks. But there is also a big interest in the characteristic live music setting from silent movies. These days there are many silent movie screenings that are accompanied with live music. Likewise, the number of events which are trying to bring back the music on the stage presented by an orchestra increases. Hollywood in Vienna is one of these concerts. The film music event takes place once a year at the Wiener Konzerthaus. An international well-known film music conductor conducts the Austrian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Compared to other types of events that are offering live performed film music, there is no entire film shown. Due to the choice of music this wouldn’t be possible because there are played pieces of music of many different films. At the presentation of film music at Hollywood in Vienna the visualization plays a big and important role. The visuals are including objects, images and also original scenes from the films and are well adapted to the light show.
This master’s thesis focuses on the different kinds of film screenings, the relation between music and film image. In the end the questions How music is adapted to be played on a stage? and Why does Hollywood in Vienna include an extensive visualization although they want to present the music as central art form the event? is answered.
