This master’s thesis in an inquiry about the proliferation and popularization process of large-scale urban street running events in Europe. The thesis aims to uncover some aspects of the relationship between urban governance strategies and municipal policies on the one hand, and the proliferation and popularization of street running events since the 1980s on the other hand. The work approaches street running events in cities from the perspective of sport tourism, and from the point of view that these events, just like other cultural and leisure activities, are part of a larger “festival continuum”, which not only provides an endless variety of newer experiences for citizen to chose from, but it also facilitates cities in improving their competitiveness and attractiveness for capital investment and prospective citizens alike. My case studies are focused on Budapest and the Budapest Marathon Festival, and Vienna and the Vienna City Marathon.
