Die vorliegende Magisterarbeit hat den, vom Co-Piloten absichtlich verursachten, Germanwings Absturz am 24. März 2015 zum Anlass genommen die entstandene öffentliche Debatte zu untersuchen. Es ist dabei schnell vermutet worden, dass der Co-Pilot krank gewesen sein muss.
Die Untersuchung dieser Magisterarbeit war deshalb geleitet von folgender Forschungsfrage: Welche Rolle spielt das Tabu-Thema „psychische Gesundheit von Piloten“ in der öffentlichen Kommunikation nach dem Germanwings Absturz?
Um diese Frage zu beantworten, wird mithilfe einer Input-Output-Analyse die öffentliche Kommunikation untersucht. Der Input besteht dabei aus Pressemitteilungen von ausgewählten Akteuren der Luftfahrtbranche und der Output aus Artikeln der Medienberichterstattung. Input und Output sollen im Kontext der Kommunikation über den Absturz des Germanwings Flugzeugs erheben, wie und ob das Tabu-Thema „psychische Gesundheit von Piloten“ eine Rolle spielt und welchen Einfluss der Input auf den Output ausübt.
Die Ergebnisse bestätigen die Annahme, dass es sich bei der psychischen Gesundheit von Piloten um ein Tabu-Thema handelt. In der öffentlichen Kommunikation der Luftfahrtbranche wurde das Thema in 12,5 Prozent der untersuchten Pressemitteilungen aufgegriffen, also eher selten. Besonders auffällig ist die Erkenntnis, dass die (Konkurrenz-)Airlines von Germanwings und Lufthansa zum Absturz schweigen. In der Medienberichterstattung lag der durchschnittliche Anteil der Artikel, die das Tabu-Thema „psychische Gesundheit von Piloten“ behandelten, bei 16,1 Prozent. Die weiteren Ergebnisse offenbaren, dass die Medienberichterstattung von den Inhalten der Pressemitteilungen schwach beeinflusst wurde, was mit einer Übernahmequote von 26 Prozent gezeigt werden konnte. Die Artikel der Medienberichterstattung haben dabei das Stigma psychischer Erkrankungen durch vereinfachte Darstellungen gefördert.

The presented Master Thesis took the Germanwings crash on the 24th of March 2015 that was caused intentionally by the co-pilot as a reason for this study. The public debate quickly concluded that the co-pilot had to be sick to do so.
The survey of this Thesis was therefore supposed to answer the research question: What is the role of the taboo topic “mental health of pilots” in the public communication after the Germanwings crash? An input-output analysis was used to answer the research question. The input consisted of the press releases from selected parties of the aviation industry. The output included media articles of selected newspapers. The role of the topic “mental health of pilots” was identified in the sample and the influence that the input had on the output was revealed.
The results suggest that the topic “mental health of pilots” is indeed a taboo subject within the public communication of the aviation industry; it was only mentioned in 12.5 percent of the press releases. In the media coverage the average percentage of articles mentioning the topic was 16.1. The influence of the press releases on the articles was weak, only 26 percent of the press releases from the aviation industry were mentioned in the media articles. Some of the articles used simplifying links between the intentional crash and the possible illness of the co-pilot, a course of action which can result in a stigmatization of mental illnesses.
