Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Art und Weise, wie Women of the Sun Ideologiekritik im Kontext der Geschichte von australischen Aborigines im Zeitraum vom Beginn der Kolonisation bis zum 1980ern Jahren macht. Der Film zerlegt den Mythos einer 'friedlichen Siedlung'. Stattdessen, persönliche Geschichten von Frauen werden gezeigt, die aktive Teilnehmerinnen in der Geschichte sind. Das imaginative Potenzial von Women of the Sun offenbart sich nicht nur durch die Ideologiekritik sondern auch durch die Tatsache, dass der Film den imaginativen Raum für neue Zukunft schafft. Das australische Publikum wird mit einer neuen Repräsentation von der nationalen Vergangenheit konfrontiert. Dadurch wird das kulturelle Identität Australiens neu dargestellt. Der Film trägt eine starke feministische Botschaft, weil es sich mit aktiver weiblichen Kraft in allen vier Folgen beschäftigt. Dieser Raum wird strategisch den weiblichen Filmfiguren gewidmet, um das was früher in den historischen Erzählungen gefehlt hat aufzuzeigen. Alle andere Filmfiguren – die Aborigines als auch die weiße Filmfiguren – sind auch sorgfältig geschildert. Es gibt keine Vereinfachung von zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen. Der Film kreiert keine Feindbilder, ganz im Gegenteil, wir sehen die Standpunkte von verschiedenen Filmfiguren und so wird ein umfassenderes Bild von einer komplexen Realität dargestellt. Ideologie kann man erkennen, in den Momenten wo persönliche Entscheidungen getroffen werden und emotionale Spannung aufgebaut wird. Das ist bedeutsam für Publikumsreflexion. Es muss auch gesagt werden, dass obwohl der Film einen wichtigen Diskussionsraum geschafft hat, er repräsentiert einfach noch eine Erzählung über die Geschichten der Menschen, die nicht unbedingt der Realität von echten Personen entspricht. Das heißt, dass das kritische Potenzial von diesen Geschichten noch mehr erforscht werden muss. Die Lebensbedingungen von Aborigines sind auch 35 Jahren nach der Filmproduktion noch immer schlecht. Weitere Forschungsarbeiten können und sollen das als Thema weiter recherchieren. Das imaginative Potenzial von Women of the Sun sollte mehr erforscht werden.

This thesis looks at the way Women of the Sun puts forward an elaborate critique of ideology in the context of Australian Aboriginal history from the beginning of colonisation until the 1980s. It breaks down the myth of a 'peaceful settlement' and instead shows personal stories of women who are active participants in history. The imaginative potential of the film exceeds the critique of ideology in the sense that it also effectively creates an imaginative space for new futures. It confronts the Australian audience with a different representation of the national past and by doing so proposes viewing cultural identity of Australia in new ways. Its strong feminist agenda is evident in the focus on female agency, which flows through all four episodes. The space is strategically given to female characters in order to point out what was lacking in historical narratives before. Furthermore the way other characters are portrayed, Aboriginal as well as white characters, shows that there was a lot of attention given to avoiding an oversimplification of human relations. The series does not convey enemy images, on the contrary, the point of view is changing between different characters in order to offer a bigger picture. Ideology can be discerned from the banal decisions in the moments of emotional tension that happen inside characters. This is valuable for audience reflection. It is necessary to point out that while the film opens up space for a discussion on some controversial issues in Australian history, it is nevertheless another narrative about people’s history that does not necessarily transport the realities of living individuals. This means that the potential for critical inquiry is still greatly unexplored. Even some 35 years after the production of the films in Australia, the conditions under which Aboriginal people live are far from satisfactory. Another research paper could deal with the aftermath of such an important project and the question of how it can be prevented that important social questions disappear in the socio-cultural space of overflowing streams of information. The imaginative potential of Women of the Sun needs to be pushed and explored further.
