Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit gibt einen Überblick über den Verlauf des Prioritätsstreits zwischen Isaac Newton und Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist es, zu analysieren, welchen Einfluss die Gelehrtengesellschaft The Royal Society auf die beiden Wissenschaftler und den Verlauf des Disputes an der Wende vom 17. zum 18. Jahrhundert hatte. Das Heranziehen einschlägiger Fachliteratur und originaler Korrespondenzen lässt folgenden Schluss zu: Die Mitgliedschaft in der Royal Society begünstigte vor allem Newton. Seine unter dem Namen der Royal Society veröffentlichten Werke und die Position als Präsident der Gelehrtengesellschaft verschafften ihm ganz offensichtlich Vorteile im Streit mit Leibniz. Die Mitgliedschaft seines deutschen Kontrahenten im Gelehrtenkreis stand hingegen von Anfang an unter keinem guten Stern, er war stets Kritik und Plagiatsvorwürfen ausgesetzt. Aus diesem Grund muss der Royal Society ein nicht unerheblicher Einfluss, sowohl auf die beiden Wissenschaftler persönlich, als auch auf den unmittelbaren Verlauf des Prioritätsstreits zugeschrieben werden.

This thesis outlines the course of the calculus dispute between Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. The aim of the present paper is to analyse the influence of the Royal Society on the two mathematicians and the course of the dispute at the turn of the seventeenth to the eighteenth centuries. By using specialised literature and original correspondence, it is possible to conclude the following: the membership in the Royal Society had, for Newton especially, a positive effect. The writings, which were published under the name of the Royal Society, and the position he held as the president of the learned society favoured him in the dispute with Leibniz. By contrast the fellowship of his German rival was ill-fated, as he would constantly find himself exposed to criticism and accusations of plagiarism. Based on the results of this research, it can be concluded that the Royal Society had a significant influence on the two scientists as well as on the immediate course of the priority dispute.
