Obwohl die ersten demokratischen Wahlen in Südafrika im Jahre 1994 das Ende des Apartheidregimes bedeuten sollten, ist das Leben vieler SüdafrikanerInnen immer noch von der diskriminierenden Ideologie gezeichnet und äußert sich darin, dass die Mehrheit der Population an einem sogenannten kollektiven Trauma leidet, welches auf die Apartheidzeit zurückgeführt werden kann. Dieses kollektive Trauma kann als eine häufige Thematik in Südafrikanischen Traumaromanen identifiziert werden. Bei der Analyse jener Romane kann oftmalig ein Zusammenhang zwischen Trauma und Kunst festgestellt werden. Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit analysiert und vergleicht vier ausgewählte Südafrikanische Traumaromane im Hinblick auf diesen Zusammenhang. Jene sind die zwei von Zakes Mda verfassten Romane "The Heart of Redness" und "Ways of Dying", "A Quilt of Dreams" von Patricia Schonstein und "The Dreamcloth" von Joanne Fedler. Um eine fundierte Analyse dieser Romane zu ermöglichen, widmet sich der erste Teil der Arbeit einer Darbietung und Diskussion von relevanten theoretischen Konzepten in Bezug auf Kunst und Trauma. Es wird nicht nur das kollektive Trauma ausgelöst vom Apartheidregime dargeboten, sondern auch das Jüdische kollektive Trauma, welches auf den Holocaust zurückgeführt werden kann, behandelt, da zwei der vier Romane auch das kollektive Trauma der Jüdinnen und Juden thematisieren. Die Analyse der Romane zeigt, dass die heilende Wirkung von Kunst in Bezug auf Trauma ein verbreitetes Motiv in Südafrikanischen Traumaromanen darstellt. Jeder der vier Romane deutet darauf hin, dass der Kunst eine inhärente beruhigende und heilende Funktion zugeschrieben kann, die sowohl den Künstler oder die Künstlerin selbst als auch die KonsumentInnen der Kunst bei der Verarbeitung von individuellen und vererbten Traumata unterstützt. Der aktive Schaffungsprozess von Kunst hilft dem oder der traumatisierten Künstler/in dabei, etwas augenscheinlich Unausdrückbares in etwas Ausdrückbares zu verwandeln, und hilft somit die widerfahrenen Traumata mental zu verarbeiten.

Despite the Apartheid regime’s official abolishment in 1994 when the first democratic elections took place in South Africa, the trauma resulting from the segregational and discriminating character of the ideology still lingers amongst the nation’s population. This collective South African trauma can be identified as a frequent topic in South Africa’s literary industry. Analysing those post-Apartheid trauma novels, it becomes apparent that they frequently centre on the relationship between trauma and art. The present diploma thesis analyses and compares four selected South African trauma novels in terms of how art is portrayed in relation to trauma. Those four novels are "The Heart of Redness" and "Ways of Dying" by Zakes Mda, "A Quilt of Dreams" by Patricia Schonstein and "The Dreamcloth" by Joanne Fedler, all of which are pervaded by the theme art. In order to enable the discussion of the aforementioned trauma novels, the thesis summarises theoretical background information on the topics of trauma and art that are indispensable for the analysis. Besides providing a detailed account on South Africa’s collective trauma due to Apartheid, the thesis also thematises the collective trauma of the Jewish population due to the Holocaust, since two of the four selected trauma novels additionally feature the Jewish collective trauma. The analysis of the four selected trauma novels reveals art’s enabling function to overcome trauma. All of them suggest that art possesses an inherent healing function for both the traumatised artist as well as for the psychologically distressed consumers of the pieces of art. Not only the active process of creating art – which helps the traumatised artist to express something seemingly inexpressible and functions as a way of transforming the shattered pieces of the past into a new, more bearable life narrative – but also the passive consumption of art might assist the traumatised human beings with overcoming their individual and inherited traumas.
