Diese Diplomarbeit thematisiert die beiden englischen Tabu-Attribute damn und fucking von einem Konstruktionsgrammatikstandpunkt. Untersucht wird sowohl der syntaktische Rahmen als auch der adjektive und nominale Kollokationsrahmen der beiden Attribute aus der Perspektive von Traugott und Trousdales (2013) Grammatikalisierungsmodell, Constructionalization and Constructional Change, anhand des Corpus of Historical American English (COHA) (Davies 2010). Von deren Standpunkt aus beinhaltet der Grammatikalisierungsprozess drei grundlegende Prozesse: Anstieg der Schematizität, Anstieg der Produktivität und Rückgang der Kompositionalität, wobei Letzterer optional ist. Daher repräsentieren beide erforschten Attribute eine Veränderung ihrer syntaktischen Slots, sodass sich beide neben ihrer ursprünglichen syntaktischen Funktion auch in neuen syntaktischen Funktionen wiederfinden. Ebenso ist ein Anstieg der Produktivität beider Attribute erkennbar, sodass sie neben ihrer ursprünglichen Präferenz für negativ konnotierte Adjektive nun auch mit positiv konnotierten und neutralen Adjektiven kollokieren, und dass sie neben ihrer ursprünglichen Präferenz für unlebendige Nomen nun auch mit lebendigen Nomen kollokieren. Jene Hypothesen werden mit Hilfe einer Methode von Hilpert (2008), Diachrone Distinktive Kollexem-Analyse, und einem Skript von Gries (2014) im Statistikprogramm RStudio (RStudio Team 2015) überprüft. Diese Diplomarbeit zeigt, dass beide Attribute, damn und fucking, Traugott und Trousdales Grammatikalisierungsmodell in einem beträchtlichen, wenn auch unterschiedlichen, Ausmaß widerspiegeln.

This diploma thesis takes a constructionist approach to the two English taboo intensifiers damn and fucking. I explore the syntactic range as well as the collocational adjective and collocational noun range of these two intensifiers from the perspective of Traugott and Trousdale’s (2013) approach towards Grammaticalization, which is Constructionalization and Constructional Change, in the Corpus of Historical American English (COHA) (Davies 2010). From this perspective, the diachronic development of the two intensifiers at focus involves three particular processes: increased Schematicity, increased Productivity and decreased Compositionality, the latter being optional. Thus, both intensifiers under examination display a loss of their original syntactic slots to open up for other syntactic slots, and an increase in collocates from originally negatively connoted adjectives to negatively connoted, positively connoted and neutral adjectives as well as from originally animate nouns to animate and inanimate nouns. These hypotheses are tested by using Hilpert’s (2008) Diachronic Distinctive Collexeme Analysis and are calculated by a script provided by Gries (2014) in RStudio (RStudio Team 2015). This thesis reveals that both intensifiers damn and fucking resemble Traugott and Trousdale’s process of Constructionalization and Constructional Change to a sufficient, but varying extent.
