Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract

Abstract Migraine is a common disease affecting approximately 15% of the population of the developed world, where patients are predominantly women. The two main subtypes of the disease are migraine with aura and
migraine without aura. The disease has a significant impact on quality of
life; reducing its performance and limiting the ability and capacity to fully live. Migraine is a multifactorial neurological disease. According to
recent studies, genetics plays an important role in migraine pathophysiology. Some gene mutations in populations of patients have been found and are thought to be the key underlying feature of the disease. Having a family history of migraine incidence greatly increases the likelihood of migraine and can provide some explanation to its presence. People who suffer from migraines in most cases have sensitive
nervous systems and are susceptible to a number of surrounding factors
precipitating migraine attacks. For patients, these factors are usually individual-specific and migraine attacks may vary in intensity, frequency and duration from patient to patient. Correct and properly selected acute treatment or prophylaxis started at the right time is a key factor for improving the lives of patients with migraine.
Today, preventive and acute therapy of migraine encompasses a wide selection of medications. To simplify the pharmacotherapy of migraine, different European and national guidelines have been established. Guidelines recommend approaches for treatment, drugs with levels of their efficacy as well as dosage. All recommendations are evidence-based and form a reliable source for physicians.
