Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
When it comes to volatility forecasting, there are plenty models that come into question. One of the most recent is the so called HARQ model, by Bollerslev et al. [BPQ16]. It considers the Realized Quarticity, trying to compensate large forecasting errors caused by a volatile stock market. This is a new approach in the field of volatility forecasting and therefore an optimal subject for a replication study.
An extended evaluation was conducted, reproducing the analysis of Bollerslev et al. [BPQ16] as well as a graphical analysis to complement the results. To forecast the Realized Variance of the Dow Jones industrial average, the models were trained by both, rolling windows and increasing windows. The models were then compared using the MSE and QLIKE loss-functions. For the graphical analysis, histograms of the forecasting values and cumulative error plots were created.
While the HARQ model did do well overall, it did not perform distinctively better than more popular models such as the HAR and CHAR models. The success of the HARQ model could not be reproduced and the behavior of the Realized Quarticity in the context of volatility forecasting is left to be subject to further research.
