Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis critically discusses, on a theoretical and methodological level, the research of aesthetic experiences in empirical aesthetics and neuroaesthetics. To focus this review, aesthetic appreciation is placed into the context of a decision-making process, in which aesthetic judgements are created, maintained and renegotiated to tie to an aesthetic experience. By taking the perspective of a decision-making problem, the evaluation of an aesthetic object is dissociated from its probable outcome–the valuation of an aesthetic object. This clear separation enables to take the functional relationship between a perceiver and an art object into account. Herein, context as an independent variable is considered as one of the main drivers in aesthetic judgements, by influencing the evaluation process of an art object. Both approaches, function and context, are taken up to exemplify two study designs. Both study proposals will focus on social reputation as a context variable. The evidence of social status manipulations is based on research in neuropharmacology. Study 1 intends to examine social reputation and its motivational effects on taking an effort in a good, honest performance. Study 2 attempts to find a probably dissociation of liking and wanting, operationalized as willingness to pay, in aesthetics. For both studies, we suggest a public versus private group paradigm, to prove our assumptions regarding contextual effects. This thesis intends to serve as a basis for a new interdisciplinary approach in empirical aesthetics and neuropharmacology. Furthermore, with the two study proposals, we hope to deliver a new system-oriented approach into the field of neuroaesthetics.
