Diese Arbeit untersucht die Entwicklungen neuer Räume in der internationalen politischen Ökonomie. Im genaueren befasst sie sich mit dem Offshore-Finanzplatz der Cayman Inseln (offshore financial centre – OFC), eines der größten OFCs, nicht nur in der Karibik, sondern auch der Welt. Diese Arbeit versucht zu einem Verständnis wirtschaftlicher Globalisierungsprozesse und der Rolle der OFCs darin zu kommen. Das exponentielle Wachstum der Finanzmärkte in der Nachkriegszeit hat ein großes akademisches Interesse angespornt und markierte einen Wandel von einem industriellen hinzu einem Finanzkapitalismus. Mit wachsendem globalen Wohlstand steigt auch die Gelegenheit diesen Wohlstand für ständig zunehmende Renditen zu verwatlen. Privat- und Großkundenbanken, Offshore-Treuhand und Fonds, Beteiligungsgesellschaften, unternehmenseigene Versicherungsgesellschaften, Spediteursregister und andere finanzielle Aktivitäten sind alle in Folge der finanzialisierung der Weltwirtschaft entstanden. Die kosten dessen sind jedoch ebenfalls offensichtlich. Politiker als auch Ökonomen sind momentan damit beschäftigt, den Schaden von Steuerumgehung, Kapitalflucht, Steuerhinterziehung und Geldwäsche zu ermessen. All das trägt zu einer Instabilität des Finanzsystems bei. Diese Arbeit versucht die Beziehung zwischen wirtschaftlicher Globalisierung, Entwicklungen in der globalen politischen Ökonomie und der Zunahme von OFCs zu erklären. Dabei liegt der Fokus auf zwei Kernaspekten. Erstens wird der Aufbau und die Entwicklung des OFCs auf den Caymaninseln untersucht. Zweitens wird die Rolle von OFCs im allgemeinen und der des Cayman OFC im genauen in der internationalen politischen Ökonomie behandelt. Dadurch liefert die Arbeit Punkte, die für Akademiker von interesse sind, welche sich mit OFCs, wirtschaftlicher Globalisierung, politischer Ökonomie des Finanzwesens, transnationalem Kapitalismus, Investmentlehre und Mirkostaatenentwiklung befassen.

This thesis explores the development of new spaces in international political economy. Its specific frame of reference is the Cayman Islands offshore financial centre (OFC) – one of the largest OFCs not only in the Caribbean but also in the world. This work aims to move towards an understanding of processes of economic globalization and the role of OFCs in it. The exponential growth of financial markets in the post-war period has spurred a broad scholarly interest and marked a shift from industrial to finance capitalism. As global wealth increases, so does the opportunity to manage that wealth for ever-increasing rates of return. Private and wholesale banking, offshore trusts and funds, holding companies, captive insurance, shipper registers, and other financial activities are all the makings of the financialization of the world economy. The cost of it is also evident. Politicians and economists are currently busy with assessing the damage of tax avoidance, capital flight, tax evasion, and money laundering. All this contributes to the instability of the financial system. This work aims to explain the relationship between economic globalization, trends in the global political economy and the rise of OFCs. It focuses on two primary issues. Firstly, it looks at the anatomy and evolution of the Cayman Islands OFC. Secondly, it discusses the role of OFCs in general and the Cayman OFC in particular in international political economy. In doing so, the paper offers points of interest to academics researching such fields as OFCs, economic globalization, the political economy of finance, transnational capitalism, investment theory, and microstates’ development.
