Wir leben in einer Zeit geprägt von außerordentlicher menschlicher Mobilität, technologischem Fortschritt und dem kontinuierlichem Wandel wirtschaftlicher, politischer und sozialer Strukturen. Basierend auf diesen Entwicklungen entstand die Theorie des Transnationalismus. Die Theorie des Transnationalismus im Bereich der Migrationsforschung ist eine innovative Methode und berücksichtigt gegenwärtige Verhaltensmuster in der Migration, wobei es jedoch kein einheitliches Framework gibt. In der vorliegenden Masterarbeit wird daher zunächst das Konzept der transnationalen Räume vorgestellt und drei verschiedene Ebenen (die Mikro-Ebene für das Geburtsland der Migranten, die Makro-Ebene für das Gastland und die Meso-Ebene, welche sich auf Migrationsgemeinschaften konzentriert) identifiziert, bevor Schlüsselkriterien für jede dieser Ebenen entwickelt werden, um die Situation der Migrationsgemeinschaften sowie deren transnationale soziale Praktiken zu analysieren. Demzufolge passt sich diese Theorie den vorherrschenden Bedingungen des gegenwärtigen, globalen Migrationsphänomens an. Diese Masterarbeit nützt das entwickelte Framework als Grundlage, um Migrationsströme zwischen Korea und Japan sowie die Charakteristika der koreanischen Bevölkerung in Japan, Zainichi genannt, zu analysieren, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf die Zeit ab 2005 gelegt wird, da vor vierzig Jahren die diplomatischen Beziehung zwischen Korea und Japan wieder aufgenommen und ein Vertrag unterzeichnet wurde. Die Analyse von Korea auf der Mikro-Ebene konzentriert sich auf die sozio-ökonomischen und politischen Bedingungen sowie auf die sozialen Aspekte und die Motivation hinter der Auswanderung. Die Analyse von Japan auf der Makro-Ebene untersucht Migrationsströme nach Japan, die sozio-politischen Bedingungen für Einwanderer sowie die wirtschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen den beiden Ländern. Die Analyse der Meso-Ebene beschäftigt sich mit Zainichi-Gemeinschaften in Japan als transnationale Akteure und erforscht u.a. die sozio-ökonomische Position von Zainichi und Institutionen, welche von Zainichi genutzt werden.

We live in an era of exceptional human mobility, technological advancement and continuous transformation of economic, political and social structures. Based on these developments the theory of transnationalism emerged. The theory of transnationalism in the field of migration studies is an innovative method and considers contemporary migratory patterns. However, there exists no coherently derived framework. Consequently, this master’s thesis first introduces the concept of transnational social spaces and identifies three different levels (the micro-level for the home-land of migrants, the macro-level for the host-land and the meso-level focusing on the migrant communities) before developing key criteria for each level in order to analyze the conditions of migrant communities as well as their transnational social practices. Therefore, the theory of transnationalism adapts to the conditions of contemporary migratory phenomena in a global setting. On the basis of the developed framework, this master’s thesis aims to analyze migration flows between Korea and Japan as well as characteristics of Korean migrant groups in Japan, called Zainichi, focusing on the time from 2005 onwards given that it has been forty years since the relations between Korea and Japan have been normalized and a treaty has been signed. The micro-level analysis of Korea focuses on the socio-economic and political conditions in Korea as well as the social aspects and motivation behind the emigration. The macro-level analysis of Japan studies migration flows to Japan, the socio-political conditions for immigrants as well as the economic relations between the two countries. Finally, the meso-level analysis of Zainichi communities in Japan as transnational players in the transnational social space deals among other things with the socio-economic position of Zainichi or institutions used by the communities.
