Die Masterarbeit präsentiert eine detaillierte Analyse des möglichen Erwerbs des wichtigen Players im Smartphone-Markt, BlackBerry und des größten Smartphone-Herstellers der Welt, Samsung. Im Jahr 2015 berichtete Reuters Nachrichtenagentur, dass Samsung mit BlackBerry für eine potenzielle Übernahme im Wert von bis zu $ 7,5 Milliarden angesprochen. Neben der Beschreibung der Smartphone-Industrie sowie beider Unternehmen wird in diesem Papier auch eine Zusammenfassung der strategischen und finanziellen Gründe für die mögliche Transaktion vorgestellt. Laut der Bewertung von BlackBerry mit der Methode Discounted Cash Flow und der Methode der Multiples, war der gemunkelte Preis von Samsung fair. Darüber hinaus könnte diese Übernahme Samsung unangefochtener Marktführer in der Branche machen. Diese Transaktion fand jedoch nie statt und wir können nur mögliche Konsequenzen erraten.

The Master’s thesis presents a detailed analysis of the potential acquisition of the important player in the smartphone market BlackBerry by the biggest smartphone producer in the world Samsung. In 2015, Reuters news agency reported that Samsung approached BlackBerry for a potential acquisition worth for as much as $7.5 billion. Besides description of the smartphone industry as well as both companies, also a summary of strategic and financial reasons of the possible transaction are presented in this paper. According to the valuation of BlackBerry using the method of Discounted Cash Flow and the method of multiples, the rumored price offered by Samsung was fair. Moreover, this acquisition could make Samsung indisputable leader in the industry. However, this transaction never took place and we can only guess about possible consequences.
