Abstract
(Deutsch)
Um die Mitte des 8. Jh. v.
Abstract
(Englisch)
Around the middle of the 8th century BC, a situation of immense inhumanity arose in the northern kingdom of Israel, where the poor could even be bought for just a pair of sandals (cf. Am 8,6). Following these terrible events, the Lord God raised a herdsman and dresser of sycamore-figs, Amos, from Tekoa, south of Bethlehem in Judea, to be a prophet. Amos set off for Bet-El in the northern kingdom. He was to warn the people against the destruction threatened by God. For charity and the fear of God had long since disappeared from among the people. Therefore, Amos strongly urged the people not to appease God with offerings like a man, but rather to "let justice flow like water, and uprightness like a never-failing stream" (Am 5,24). In carrying out God’s order, Amos faced fierce criticism and life-threat.
The Theme of Justice and Uprightness has left its mark in the other Old and New Testament books as well as in the works of the Church Fathers and Theologians. But how has the proclamation of Amos been interpreted, reviewed and presented through the years? Which parallel interpretations are available?
In concrete terms, this Thesis has taken into account and analyzed the case of Zambia – a land full of natural resources and great potential, which, otherwise due to corruption and misuse of public property, repeatedly encounters many social, political and economic difficulties. It lacks the rule of law, order and responsibility in dealing with common resources. As a result of this, most of the population lives in poverty. The Catholic Church has been fighting for years against this social disorder in the country. But with what right or mandate and with what authority does she do that?
Accordingly, this Thesis is an attempt to rediscover the eminent importance of Amos' prophecy and to adapt it to our times. The Proposition of this Work: For the benefit of the oppressed and life-threatened, God intervenes through His prophets so as to restore justice and righteousness among the peoples. Even today, the situation of Zambia could be improved through taking heed of the prophetic appeal of Amos and the Catholic Social Teaching.
From this perspective, it is hoped that in the future, a corruption-free and politically-economically strong Zambia could emerge. However, this requires a collective effort to bring Zambia out of the political and economic crisis.
