Umfangreiche Verwendung der Symbole ist oft erwähnt als eine der bedeutendsten Eigenschaften in den Romanen Virginia Woolfs. Man bezeichnet die Zusammensetzung ihrer Prosa als „poetisch“ und „lyrisch“, gehend jenseits des Reinprosaischen. Innerhalb der drei Romane analysiert in dieser Masterarbeit – Zum Leuchtturm, Mrs Dalloway, und Die Wellen – wurde eine Neigung zur Darstellung der Wirklichkeit durch das Symbolische bemerkt. Ernsthafte Angelegenheiten – das Kämpfen gegen Wahnsinn, die Bewältigung des Todesunfalles – werden häufig durch entsprechende Bilder und Symbole besprochen, welche komplexe Emotionen darstellen. Diese Masterarbeit behandelt die gemeinsamen symbolischen Muster wie die Archetypen der Elternschaft und Ehe, und die Bedeutung des Wassers als Archetyp für Woolf. Solche Muster werden durch theoretische Konzepte wie objektives Korrelat, Northrop Fryes Theorie der Symbole, und das Überwältigende analysiert. Die Vorteile und die Nachteile Woolfs Zugang zur Wirklichkeitsdarstellung wurden identifiziert, indem der Verfasser sich auf Woolfs Verwendung der Symbole und Bilder konzentriert hat. Das Folgende ist die Schlussfolgerung: Virginia Woolf stellt schließlich eine Wirklichkeit dar, in welcher das Äußere und das Innere in Eintracht sind.

Extensive use of symbols is often singled out as one of the most prominent features in the writing of Virginia Woolf. Her prose is usually described as being “poetic” and “lyrical” in its composition, going beyond the purely prosaic. Within the three novels analysed for this thesis – To the Lighthouse, Mrs Dalloway, and The Waves – a tendency to constitute reality in symbolic terms has been noticed. Serious issues such as fighting against madness and coping with the death of a loved one are discussed via appropriate imagery and symbols representing complex emotions associated with such issues. This thesis focuses on the isolation and analysis of shared symbolic patterns such as the archetypes of parenthood and matrimony and significance of water as archetype for Woolf. Patterns such as these are analysed through theoretical concepts of the objective correlative, Northrop Frye’s theory of symbols, and the Overwhelming. By focusing on Woolf’s use of symbols and images, the author has identified the advantages and disadvantages of such an approach to reality representation and concluded that Virginia Woolf’s use of symbols ultimately establishes a reality in which the external and the internal are in harmony.
