Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The credit rating industry is one where its participants’ position in the market is determined by reputation. The Big Three credit rating agencies (CRAs) hold a privileged position based on their existing reputations and the high costs of reputation building. I find in this study that despite the reputation of the Big Three being damaged following the financial crisis, this has had little effect on the market for ratings. This we find suggests a failure of the market to react to short term reputational changes, thus rendering the reputation mechanism limited in its ability to hold rating agencies to account. By analysing post financial crisis EU regulation on the CRAs, we find that despite a handful of small
measures to decrease the concentration in the market; on the whole, they are limited in their effectiveness due to the fact that they do not focus enough on addressing the dearth of information which would allow investors and issuers to assess the quality of the rating agencies and the ratings themselves. This therefore, ignores the high costs of reputation building which leads to a concentrated market.
