Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to show the relationships and the differences between common
and proper nouns, in order to specify and distinguish the extraordinary characteristics of product
and brand names. Product names as specific linguistic units seem to have developed a certain
grammatical behavior which differs from other groups of proper nouns. Following a review of
a limited and selective corpus, it can be stated that in grammatical categories such as phonetics,
morphology, and semantics, product names show differentiated behavior compared to other
proper nouns (e.g. anthroponyms, toponyms). Thus, product names tend to take the grammatical
shape of appellative constructions, which in turn urges future linguistic research to pay more
attention to this constant evolution. Furthermore, the inclusion of economic research and global
branding processes are essential for a modern and progressive state of onomastic linguistics.
Brand names, i.e. legally protected product names, can be regarded as a certain kind of product
name. A synonymic use of the two terms can be avoided through a strict differentiation.
