Abstract
(Deutsch)
Die Diplomarbeit aus dem Fach Kirchengeschichte untersucht Kirchenpolitik im 9. Jahrhundert.
Abstract
(Englisch)
This thesis in church history examines church politics in the 9th century. Having defined a concept of church politics that encompasses both external and internal aspects, the papal church policy of Pope Nicholas I (858-867) is defined as subject of the study. To this day, Nich-olas I is perceived as one of the most important popes of the 9th century. What constitutes the relevance of his pontificate is not only the formulation of papal claims, but their implementa-tion. Nicholas I succeeds – unlike many of his predecessors – not only to formulate the papal claims, but also to redeem them.
In order to examine Nicholas I’s church politics, the investigation fields “East” and “West” are opened, between which the papal church politics of the 9th Century moves, and the pre-conditions – i.e. a long-term transformational process, that can be described at the same time as a detachment from Byzantium and a shift to the Franks – is recapitulated in the first part.
In the second part, the examination fields “East” and “West” are transferred to the pontifi-cate of Nicholas I. In the conflicts with Patriarch Photios (858-867 and 877-886) and the Byz-antine Emperor in the East, as well as King Lothar II (855-867) and the Frankish bishops in the West, internal and external aspects of Nicholas I’s concept of church politics are analysed.
The connecting link between the two aspects in both fields of investigation is Nicholas I’s theology of the papal office. The study takes use of the Liber Pontificalis as well as the exten-sive letters of Nicholas I as main sources.
In a final conclusion, the results are bundled and interpreted. The conclusion reveals that the successes of Nicholas I’s church politics are embedded in a complex network that is stretched between the policy of the rulers, the claim of bishops and metropolitans, and the papal theology of the ecclesiastical office. An important result is the realization that Nicho-las I could apply his claims less by himself than in response to the historical circumstances.
