Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
Advertising has most frequently been defined as a promotion of goods and services which results in better sales of the two (Leech, 1966; Cook, 2001). In order to separate their brand from the vast competition in an ever-growing market, advertisers resort to various strategies to stay relevant. Apart from marketing tactics, one of the most powerful advertising tools is language, which is why the language of advertising is comprised of a specific vernacular, filled with superlatives and words of praise. As several studies indicate (Leigh, 1994; Toncar and Munch, 2001; van Mulken et al., 2005; Delbaere et al. 2011), the use of versatile literary devices is quite common in print advertisements. Word plays, puns, metaphors, instances of intertextuality and implicature, to name a few, are all commonly seen catching audiences’ attention and directing them toward the advertised product. The aim of this study is to perform a linguistic analysis of the Apple Inc.’s print advertisements and determine whether public perception of these advertisements varies contingent upon the use of literary devices or other linguistic and non-linguistic features. Thus, a sample of 30 print advertisements is evaluated by 50 participants and the same sample is observed in terms of structure and literary devices. The conclusions reached in this thesis provide contribution to the linguistics of advertising and furthermore, the linguistic analysis of the Apple Inc.’s advertisements.
