Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
The thesis investigates the new medium of Live Theatre Broadcasts (LTB), beginning with the origin of the medium. Later chapters analyse the shared characteristics of LTBs with cinema and theatre, such as the liveness and event-factor of a screening, as well as the addition of supplementary material in the form of introduction videos. The text then connects the new medium to celebrity culture by analysing its connection to the use of celebrity actors in the broadcasts from the National Theatre in comparison to the ensemble-oriented broadcasts from the Royal Shakespeare Company. The analysed productions are Coriolanus (2014) with Tom Hiddleston, Hamlet (2015) with Benedict Cumberbatch, and Two Gentlemen of Verona (2015) from the Royal Shakespeare Company. Ultimately, the thesis argues that LTBs are not reliant on celebrity actors or liveness, as long as the event-factor is maintained and the loss of a celebrity actor is substituted by a different unique selling point, such as a famous theatre company or a special performance location.
