Das auffälligste an A Series of Unfortunate Events ist wahrscheinlich, dass auf dem Cover im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Büchern keine Lobeshymnen aufgedruckt sind, sondern dass dem Leser augenscheinlich abgeraten wird die Serie zu lesen. Das macht die meisten Leser natürlich neugierig und nicht nur das, so lernt der mögliche Leser auch gleich den sarkastisch-verspielten Stil der Buchserie kennen. Dieser besonderen Stil entsteht vor allem durch metafiktionale Kommentare unterschiedlichster Art. Vor kurzem wurde die berühmte Buchserie von Netflix als TV-Serie adaptiert. Das Thema dieser Arbeit ist die Art und Weise wie die unerschiedlichen metafiktionalen Kommentare in der Fernsehserie umgesetzt wurden. Dabei wird ein besonderer Fokus auf solche gelegt, die sich auf Bücher und das Lesen beziehen und dadurch im Original selbstreflektiv waren. Außerdem, geht diese Arbeit auf neue selbstreflektive Kommentare ein, die das neue Medium betreffen. Diese Diplomarbeit konnte zeigen, dass die Mehrheit der metafiktionalen Kommentare die Bücher und das Lesen betreffen übernommen wurden. Diese Tatsache offenbart meiner Meinung nach, die Wichtigkeit dieser für die Serie.

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is a series that comes with a warning. While the warnings at the back of the book covers and at the beginning of the story are probably the first matafictional elements a reader comes across, they are certainly not the last. Metafictional comments can be found woven in throughout the famous book series. The book series has been made into a TV series by Netflix quite recently and this paper aims to examine if and how the different types of metafictional comments were adapted to the new medium. A special focus is put on metafictional comments that reflect on books and reading and therefore were medium-specific in the original version. The second focus are additional self-reflective comments concerning the new medium, streaming television. This thesis could show that the Netflix show featured the majority of metafictional comments focusing on books and reading, which in my opinion, reveals how essential they are to the book series.
