Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem berüchtigtsten Abschnitt der Geschichte Japans, dem Zweiten Weltkrieg, durch das Medium von Comics, spezifisch Manga und Manhwa. Das Japanische Kaiserreich hat sich mithilfe seiner enormen militärischen Macht massiv ausgedehnt zwischen 1931 und 1945 über Ost-Asien, Süd-Ost-Asien, und Ozeanien. Dies führte zu der Besetzung Japans von vielen Nationen, China als eine davon, während andere Länder schon vorher von Japan kontrolliert wurden, darunter Korea. Unter den zahlreichen Grausamkeiten und Verbrechen, die von der japanischen Armee an den Bewohnern dieser Länder verübt wurden, befand sich die weit verbreitete sexuelle Versklavung von Frauen im Auftrag des japanischen Militärs, eine Praxis die heute als „Comfort Women“ bekannt ist. Letztlich kam der Zweite Weltkrieg zu einem Ende für Japan durch den Einsatz von zwei Atombomben, welche von den USA über der Stadt Hiroshima am 6. August 1945, und über der Stadt Nagasaki am 9. August 1945 abgeworfen wurden. Die kurz- und langfristigen Konsequenzen dieser Bombenabwürfe haben Japan seither beeinflusst. Die Darstellung der Atombomben und Comfort Women im Kontext von Comics ermöglicht eine einzigartige Perspektive in das kollektive Gedächtnis von nicht nur Japan, sondern des globalen Publikums dieser Comics. Diese Arbeit untersucht die Darstellung dieser Ereignisse in ausgewählten Comics, vergleicht sie miteinander und liefert größeren Kontext über die Autoren hinter diesen Geschichten.

This thesis explores the most infamous chapter in Japan´s history, World War II, through the medium of comics, specifically Manga and Manhwa. The Empire of Japan massively expanded its territory between 1931 and 1945 across East-Asia, South-East-Asia and Oceania, using its military might. This led to the occupation of many nations under Japanese rule, China being one of them, while other nations had already been under Japanese control previously, like Korea. Among the many atrocities committed against the populations of these occupied countries, one was the practice of widespread sexual slavery for the Japanese Army, infamously known as, ”Comfort Women”. World War II ultimately came to an end for Japan with the use of two atomic bombings carried out against the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and August 9th in 1945 respectively. These bombings and both their short- and long-term consequences have affected Japan ever since. Looking at both topics of the atomic bombings and comfort women in the context of comics offers a unique perspective into the collective memory of not only Japan, but the global audience of these comics. This thesis examines the portrayal of these events in specific comics, as well as comparing the different portrayals to each other and gives greater context to the authors behind these stories.
