Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This study aims to employ the individualist-collectivist dimension as a theoretical framework in order to detect how differently individualistic and collectivistic persons use social media and its relationship to social capital formation and perceived psychological well-being. An online survey with an international sample was employed to examine the moderating effects of an individual’s level of individualism and collectivism on the relationship of social media use, social capital formation and perceived psychological well-being. The findings indicate that social media use for ‘social monitoring’ and ‘information sharing’ leads to forming online social capital, however, lowers the level of psychological well-being as a consequence. Concerning the role of the individualism-collectivism dimension, the moderating effect was found only in the relation between social media use for ‘information sharing’ and online bridging social capital.
