Kultur wurde in vielfältiger Weise für die österreichische Identität beansprucht; vor allem im Bild der Kulturnation. Das Verwenden von Kultur, sowie das Bild der Kulturnation, waren jedoch auch stets heftig umstritten. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, zu zeigen in welcher Weise sich Kultur und das Bild der Kulturnation mit der österreichischen Identitätspolitik überschneiden, sowie einige der Widersprüche zu beleuchten, die diesen Prozess begleitet haben. Die Arbeit untersucht die Entwicklung des Begriffs von seinen Ursprüngen im Deutschnationalismus, bis hin zu seiner identitätsstiftenden Verwendung in der Zweiten Republik, sowie der Verwendung von Kultur zur Kritik des vernachlässigten Umgangs Österreichs mit seiner Verwicklung in das NS-Regime. Sie wird feststellen, dass Kultur in vielfältiger und widersprüchlicher Weise verwendet wurde, und dass das Bild der Kulturnation sich mit vielen Herausforderungen befassen muss. Die Arbeit kommt zu dem Schluss, dass das Bild der Kulturnation ein politisches Narrative mit geringer Aktualität für die Gegenwart bleibt. Nichtsdestotrotz wird diese Arbeit zeigen, dass Kultur einen signifikanten Einfluss auf die österreichische Politik hatte.

Culture has been claimed in many ways for Austria identity, most notably in the image of the Kulturnation. Such uses of culture as well as the image of the Kulturnation have, however, also been subject to much contestation. The aim of this thesis is to show in what ways culture and the image of the Kulturnation have intersected with Austrian identity politics as well as to shed light on some of the contradictions that have accompanied this process. This thesis will examine the term’s evolution from its origins in pan-German nationalism, to its identity establishing use in the Second Republic as well as the use of culture to criticize Austria’s neglected dealing with its involvement in the Nazi regime. It will find that culture has been used in a great variety of contradicting ways and that the image of the Kulturnation faces many strong challenges. The thesis will conclude that the image of the Kulturnation remains a political narrative with little relevance in the present. Nevertheless, it will be shown that culture did have a significant impact on Austrian politics.
