Abstract
(Deutsch)
Abstract
(Englisch)
This research explores the role of peace education in the context of an intractable conflict. Particularly, it involves the peace educational approach of personal story telling and its role in influencing and transforming attitudes and perceptions of individuals towards the IsraeliPalestinian conflict. Despite the conflict’s international relevance, the international dimension nor the target group of internationals haven’t been in the focus of peace educational research so far. First, this issue is addressed with a theoretical approach of a four-fold sequential theoretical model comprised of conflict narratives, sociopsychological theory on attitudes and perceptions, conflict transformation theory and peace education. This research then examines a personal story telling project of the Israeli-Palestinian NGO “Combatants for Peace”, in cooperation with which a mixed methodological approach of a large-n survey and small-n focus group discussions was applied. A 3-steps research model was established aimed at exploring the issue in three stages: As a first step, it was analyzed whether participants are affected by the personal story telling approach, which was aimed at exploring a potential function of raising awareness and sensitization and measured on expressed emotional components. As a second step, the transformation of participants’ attitudes was researched and operationalized on expressed changes of emotions, changed evaluative judgments or content-related changes of attitudestowards the conflict. As a third step, the potential of personal story telling of evoking a learning effect, a repercussion effect as well as motivation to take action was explored. The results showed that personal story telling not only affects participants’ attitudes on an emotional level, it also increases awareness among them regarding the existence of two conflicting narratives. A transformation of attitudes took place as participants stated to feel more confident in voicing their opinion as well as more motivated to take an active stand towards the conflict. Further, they evaluated the conflict as more intractable after having participated in the project. Lastly, a strong learning and a repercussion effect were found among the majority of participants. The method of personal story telling triggered overreaching motivation among participants to take action and educate themselves better on the conflict. Participants seemed determined to share their experience of the project with their social environment, which reveals the potential of personal story telling of not only reaching a broad spectrum of people, but also of serving as a tool to educate people about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with its complexity of two conflicting narratives. Whatsoever, no content-related changes of attitudes towards the conflict could be detected among participants.
