Kenya wird als wichtiger regionaler Akteur in Afrika beschrieben. Der Grund dafür liegt darin, dass es großen wirtschaftlichen und politischen Einfluss auf die angrenzenden Länder ausübt. Um zu zeigen wie stark Kenya andere Länder beeinflusst, wird seine indirekte und direkte Machtausübung im internationalen Zusammenspiel der afrikanischen Politik untersucht. Dabei stützt sich die Autorin am Modell von Nye, und eine deduktive Methode wird eingesetzt, um die Forschungsziele zu erreichen. Es hat sich herausgestellt, dass der Einsatz von indirekter Macht einen positiven Effekt auf die afrikanische Politik hat, der Einsatz von direkter Macht jedoch zu negativen Resultaten führt. In der Arbeit wurde festgestellt, dass Kenia Soft Power nutzt, was auch die bessere Option ist, um einen wirksamen Einfluss auf Nachbarländer und Regionen auszuüben

Kenya has been described as the regional actor in Africa. This is because it has great influence economically and politically in the region. To establish how Kenya is a regional actor in Africa, this study investigated the effect of soft and hard powers on international politics in Africa. The study was based on Nye’s model and deductive approach was used to achieve the objectives of the study. Military expenditure as a percentage of gross domestic product was used as a proxy for hard power. Expenditure on education as a percentage of gross domestic product was used as a proxy for soft power. On the same note, political rights index was used as a proxy for international politics with a likely scale of 1 to 7. An index of 1 implied extremely strong, 2 implied very strong, 3 implied strong, 4 implied average, 5 implied weak, 6 implied very weak and 7 implied extremely weak. Secondary data was therefore used and was collected from the World Bank development indicators. It was found out that the use of soft power has a positive effect on African politics and use of hard power has a negative effect on African politics. It was therefore concluded that Kenya has a great influence in the region and it was recommended that use of soft power is the better option.
